Why Unions Are Dangerous in Education

One would think that a teacher that had 30 some years ago allegedly impregnated a 16-year-old student, a few years later sexually accosted two 12-year-old students, and was accused of molesting yet another student four years after that, would be out on his ear never to teach or be allowed around children again.

But the New York teachers union would beg to differ.

In fact, the union has differed so much that troubled teacher Francisco Olivares has been continually paid his $94,154 a year salary even though he’s been kept from the classroom for the last seven years.

So, who cares what the union says about this guy? Unfortunately, the union’s resistance to getting rid of him is enshrined in state law. The school can’t get rid of this dead weight either....

I have great admiration for anyone that wants to teach in our public schools. The teacher unions are not about what is best for the students, but what is best for the members of the union. That is a fact. Too many teachers have forgotten that school is about the students, and not what is best for them.

If conservatives want to advocate bold policies that address the real needs of our time, they should start arguing that public employees (including teachers) be prevented from unionizing.

But can you imaging the shrieks of outrage (not to mention the money) that would be brought to stop such a commonsense move!

years ago, late 70s I think, the president of the UFT in NYC (I think his name was Albert Shanker, not sure tho) said -when children start paying union dues, then I’ll start caring about the children

Anyone that gets a paycheck from the taxpayer should not be in a union period. It is rediculous how they can keep squeezing more and more from the taxpayer to pay for a bloated government.

All the private sector is doing is propping up an ineffiecient government just like what ended the USSR.

Exactly, the quote was:

“When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

A good quote to remember.
