Frum: Republican Waterloo
moderatevoice ^ | March 21, 2010 | JOE WINDISH

Former Bush speechwriter David Frum says it’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the GOP disaster. And he blames this “most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s” on conservatives and Republicans:

At the beginning of this process we made a strategic decision: unlike, say, Democrats in 2001 when President Bush proposed his first tax cut, we would make no deal with the administration. No negotiations, no compromise, nothing. We were going for all the marbles. This would be Obama’s Waterloo – just as healthcare was Clinton’s in 1994.

Only, the hardliners overlooked a few key facts: Obama was elected with 53% of the vote, not Clinton’s 42%. The liberal block within the Democratic congressional caucus is bigger and stronger than it was in 1993-94. And of course the Democrats also remember their history, and also remember the consequences of their 1994 failure.

When Rush Limbaugh said that he wanted President Obama to fail, he was intelligently explaining his own interests. What he omitted to say – but what is equally true – is that he also wants Republicans to fail. If Republicans succeed – if they govern successfully in office and negotiate attractive compromises out of office – Rush’s listeners get less angry. And if they are less angry, they listen to the radio less, and hear fewer ads for Sleepnumber beds.

So today’s defeat for free-market economics and Republican values is a huge win for the conservative entertainment industry. Their listeners and viewers will now be even more enraged, even more frustrated, even more disappointed in everybody except the responsibility-free talkers on television and radio. For them, it’s mission accomplished. For the cause they purport to represent, it’s Waterloo all right: ours.

Do you think maybe we’ll see the re-emergence of some moderate Republicans?

Obama got the bill passed, but he failed the American people.

So Obama DID fail.

Frum can cram it up his elitist arse.

Wow. Frum is modest.

NONE of us should begrudge either Frum, Mitt Romney or their Legion of attacking RomneyBOTs.
Last night was the win of Frum, Romney, and the
other antiPalin RomneyBOTs.

ROMNEYCARE IS OBAMACARE.

Frum: "I will support (Romney) without qualm."

"Romney presidential campaign staffers…have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters."

"Frum ... (Romney supporter called Gov. Palin’s) nomination a "huge mistake" October 13 (2008)"

" 80 percent of Romney's former staff was absorbed by McCain
and these individuals were responsible for what amounts
to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."

"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off
….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
... was Nicolle Wallace's husband."

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

You know Frum, biting the ankle of the guy carrying your weight is just not a manly thing to do.

I mean just imagine if you had written as many columns ripping Obama and pointing out his connections to Ayers and Alinsky and Jeremiah Wright as you have ripping Limbaugh and conservatives, or praising 0's articulation and style? Maybe we wouldn't have had this health care joke.

It's still not too late. How about some columns on how mandating health insurance coverage with IRS thugs to enforce is unconstitutional and unAmerican?

I won't hold my breath.

Frum and the person he was writing for were nothing more than a Vichy government in the US.

If this was so beloved, why did only 219/431 votefor it? (50.8% is NOT overwhelming support)

Jame Carevell is that you?

Find it odd how certain "Conservatives" no matter what the issue never find any reason to attack the Left but always seek some reason to shoot their own political allies in the back.

So which Leftist clown posse do you and Frum work for? Moveon.org? ActUp? SEIU? Organizing for America?

Freepers are too smart to fall for this idiotic drivel. We know who are friends are, we know who are enemies are. Rush is on our side, Frum is not. Since you choose Frum's idiotic drivel, apparently you aren't either.

Is Frum secretly a woman? I don’t mean to insult women, by the way, many of whom are tougher than he is.

I followed the link, was this posted so we could know our enemy? Why would anyone listen to moderates after yesterdays vote? Their appeasement and entitlement attitude help make us into a Socialist America. Moderates and Democrats (ALL Dems) need to be dropped off in the Amazon jungle so they can build their utopia or be eaten by the animals. Better yet sunk off the coast on on some old ships to create new coral reefs, at least than moderates and liberals would be useful. Boy that felt good to vent!

David Frum is a nudnick, idiotic, quisling, man of no principle, easily duped, and pawn of the left. And he’s a poofter, to boot.

Frum is an IDIOT.

Trying to make a deal with the Democrats would be like a Cambodian peasant trying to make a deal with a Khmer Rouge firing squad when all they want you to do is die.

People of Frum’s ilk detest real conservatives, esp. Christians and the Tea Party crowd. To Frum, they are the real enemy - not Democrats.

This guy is so far out on a limb with this article and the one you linked to, I’m wondering why I haven’t followed him a bit more closely just to see if he is consistently stupid.

What an utterly asinine article. Pure garbage from someone who has not looked down the road any farther than his nose. Rush wanting the GOP to lose because if they won there would be fewer listeners is the most absurd thing I’ve read this morning. What this a.. fails to recognize is that because we lost, there will ultimately be, at some point, NO DISPOSABLE Income to support the sponsers. What an idiot. Our whole economic system has been derailed and this smuck writes that Rush wanted the Republicans to fail. Frum YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

David, we’d all be better off, and you’d be happier, if you would just be done with it and immolate yourself.

re: “most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s”

No, it's not! The Democrats have a comfortable majority in the House. That's the way politics work. The majority pretty much gets done what they want to get done.

Fact is, more Democrats voted with the Republicans than the other way around. It would be a “crushing legislative defeat” had the numbers of Dems vs Republicans been more nearly equal. But with the significant majority the Democrats enjoy in the House passing anything by only 4 votes is a defeat for the majority.

Really!! and what is it that Frum is wanting anyway? A bunch of John McCains running around DC congratulating the opposition for beating their pants off... OH how collegial, how gentlemanly, how pleasant it would be if we could all have a pony like John McCain!!
