The US Fifth Fleet and US aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower in the Gulf of Oman were not allowed to shoot at an Iranian Fokker F27 aircraft which on April 21 hovered for 20 minutes 900 meters over the carrier and no more than 250 meters away, even though they saw its flight crew gathering intelligence on the Eisenhower and its warship escorts.
DEBKA-Net-Weekly's military sources report that the US Persian Gulf command went public on the incident on April 28, a whole week later, only after Gulf military circles, amazed at the American naval and air units' passivity in the face of hostile surveillance, threatened to break the story to local media.

I was on a carrier in the Med in ‘61-62. We had to anchor offshore from most ports, as they could not deal with such large ships. I was in Catapults and thus above decks and witnessed several times in various ports the MIGs flying only a few hundred feet high coming at our ship and flying over. It was a common intimidation tactic during the Cold War. I guess the US pilots probably did the same to the USSR ships. .....The MIGs never tried such when our carrier task force was at sea. Wonder why?

BS article. Flybys like that are common. all countries do that. This is the annual spring war-fever attempt to prop up oil prices.
I spent 22 years in the USN. These sort of flybys by MARPATs happen daily.
And by the way: First rule of all US ROE is that the right of self defence is pre-eminent.
As we put it in service: “You have to be alive to be CM.” The story is pure hype of a routine flyby...

The incident started when the pit bulls, who lived next door, bolted out of the front door and ran straight at Kody, witnesses said. Kody's owner, 19-year-old Broc Pulley, tried desperately to fend off the attack after a neighbor knocked on his door and told him what was happening.
Two of his friends whacked at the pit bulls with hockey sticks, while Pulley punched one of the dogs in the face in an attempt to get them off his dog. But it was too late. The larger pit bull broke the chain holding Kody and dragged his limp body two houses down. My neighbor's dog was killed this same way. A pit bull got loose, came to her yard, and tore her dog up while he was leashed. A couple of people tried to beat the pit bull off, but to no avail. She just watched her dog brutally murdered.
I hate the idea of pre-emptive law. But I am ready to support a law that requires all pit bull owners to get licenses, and to post a $50,000 bond or insurance, to be paid if their dogs attack other people or animals. They get the money back when their dog dies.
That way, people can still own the dog of their choice, but if they choose stupidly, those suffering from their choice can get compensated.
Of course, there’s nothing to see we don’t want them to see from the air. After all, we know there are satellites and higher-flying surveillance aircraft that can take pictures at any time.
But CNN makes it clear the “unusual” aspect was WHERE they Iranian plane was. Not that it was “unusual” for the Navy to allow a plane to fly over them, or not shoot them down, as the Debka report suggests.
And Admiral Roughead makes is clear WHERE they were flying was in international airspace. And he's correct. Look at a map. There's a whole lotta Iran to the north of the Gulf of Oman.
There's really no story here.
To try and explain this incident away, US naval sources Wednesday, April 28, claimed the Iranian plane was unarmed and its encounter with the US carrier was not of a threatening nature, although irregular.Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, tried to play down the importance of the incident by saying: "The Iranians (pilots) were not provocative or threatening. As long as they are professional and not threatening or reckless, it's international space."
Again the text is almost identical except that Debka provides a bit more.
