Following the U.S. House of Representatives voted on HR 2499- Statehood for Puerto Rico, my Congressional representative Bill Posey (R-FL 15) wrote to me. Rep. Posey was one of 181 cosigners to the bill, and voted for it when it was brought up late Thursday afternoon.
Andrea,
Now that the smoke has cleared a little....
Numerous callers to my office today referenced 5 bullet points, which they called Quick Facts as reasons to vote against H.R.2499.
Below in bold type are responses to the quick facts in relation to the actual bill which passed today:
Here are some quick facts:
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME SUCH LEGISLATION WAS CONSIDERED. THE HOUSE PASSED A SIMILAR BILL WHEN NEWT GINGRICH WAS THE SPEAKER.
THRU THE JONES ACT OF 1947 WHEN AMERICA NEEDED MORE TROOPS TO FIGHT IN WWI
IF THEY VOTE FOR STATUS QUO THEY DO KEEP COMMONWEALTH STATUS.
FOR SOME REASON THE QUICK FACTS DID NOT INCLUDE THE FACT 2008 REPUBLICAN VICTORIES IN PUERTO RICO INCLUDED;
Governor Luis Fortuno
Senate President Tommy Rivera-Schatz
House Speaker Jennifer Gonzalez
Senate Majority Leader Roberto Arango
San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini (and a Majority of mayors)
OR, FOR WHATEVER ITS WORTH, POLLING DATA SHOWING:
78% OF Puerto Ricans are Pro-Life
85% Favor parental notification in case of abortion by minors
91% Agree marriage is between a man and a woman
86% Agree prayer should be allowed in public schools
75% Agree that displaying the Ten Commandments should be allowed on government property.
85% are Christian
51% Favor giving parents vouchers to attend private school
57% Favor instituting a system of charter schools
95% Favor requiring public schools to improve English teaching so students become bilingual
IT MERELY ALLOWS THEM TO HAVE A NON-BINDING PLEBISCITE/ VOTE ~ AT A TIME WHEN THE U.S.A. IS ENCOUORAGING FREEDOM LOVING PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD TO PASS BINDING PLECISCITES/VOTES TO SELF DETERMINE THEIR DESTINY.
This just addresses some of the misinformation that was circulated prior to the final vote on the final version of the bill. There are many more reasons I believe it makes sense for Congress to acknowledge and encourage the NON-BINDING vote. If the voters in Puerto Rico decide they want to ask for statehood, than that is an entirely different issue to be taken up at the time. Bye the way, the liberal Puerto Rican Democrats in Congress voted against the bill! Conservative Republicans were split. Some admitted to me they voted against the bill because it was easier than trying to explain the truth. You didn't send me here to do that. You sent me here to ascertain the facts the best I could and cast an honest, and hopefully intelligent vote. I believe that is what I did.
Bill
Reason #1 - Increase the base.
Reason #2 - Increase the base.
Reason #3 - Increase the base.
Reason #4 - Increase the base.
Guess he doesn’t know about the “Tennessee Plan”.
You can bet your ass that the two new Senators that would be added would be Democrat.
Addendum: Also, your ‘representative’ should remove that friggin “R” from his designation. He’s a RINO.
I won’t be surprised if the Dems don’t throw in no federal
taxes for fifty years for voting for statehood!
If the Jones Act was passed in 1947, it was not passed in order to provide more U.S. troops to fight in World War I. World War I ended in 1918. World War II ended in 1945. What other “facts” are shaky?
“You can bet your ass that the two new Senators that would be added would be Democrat.”
The odds are overwhelmingly in your favor!
Jones Act was 1917 - I can picture that one as an easy typo if using the number pad. I’m looking at the other claims a bit.
“THRU THE JONES ACT OF 1947 WHEN AMERICA NEEDED MORE TROOPS TO FIGHT IN WWI”
LOL!!!!
About 30 years too late don’t you think?
And WWII had already ended.
He has the vacuum scull of Obama.
Question: What’s the difference between the RNC and the DNC? Answer: The first letter!
Anyway, every road sign, trash mailing, etc. for all the roaches running for the leftover abandoned seats have no AFFILIATION whatsoever....all have something like 'conservative' 'health' etc.
A case in point, I asked my sister about it - which ones are Democrat? Who are the Republicans? etc. She asked a friend....he came back with so and so is a good man, Christian, Conservative, blah blah blah....NO PARTY at all.
I go to this Rick Jasperse website....yeah, what the other guy said....look real hard is a tiny icon of an elephant BUT NO WORD ANYWHERE about Republican....
All of these posers are crooks and liberals...I am not voting for any of them.....
If the minimum income for income tax is $50,000 and the average Puerto Rican earns $17,000, then income tax is not a factor.
Luis Guillermo Fortuño Burset (born October 31, 1960) is the ninth Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States.[1] Fortuño is also the president of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico (NPP) and a member of the United States Republican Party. — President of the New Progressive Party — What a wonderful Republican sounding name for a party.
Fortuño holds the distinction of being the first Republican to be elected Governor of Puerto Rico since 1969, and the second Republican governor since 1949.[2] He was also the second Republican Representative elected from Puerto Rico in the island territorys history.[2]
-— My! That sure is a lot of Republicans!
Republican Chris Smith of NJ voted FOR cap and trade and FOR this bill. Will call him up on this bill too, just disgusting.
Every eight years, a plebiscite on the issue of the territorys status would be held for Puerto Ricans living on the island and for non resident Puerto Ricans living in the United States to vote on.
Every 8 years until they finally convince them to become a state. The last election was close enough that the 2.5 million added voters who don’t live there will likely tilt the result.
1. The PNP (statehood party) IS NOT THE SAME AS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN THE UNITED STATES. Members have caucused with both the GOP and the Dems. Luis Fortuno, current PNP governor, caucused with the GOP when he was resident commissioner, but is a supporter of Obama care. Let us not forget that his political mentor, Carlos Romero Barcelo, even wrote a book called "Statehood is for the Poor." The PNP (who are the so called "Republican" victors in this idiots response), usually promote statehood in the name of additional "social service benefits for the island.
2. You can see similar poll numbers on blacks and hispanics on the mainland in terms of supporting "conservative" issues. The Pay-Nay-Pays have quoted the same figures at me but... 3. If Puerto Rico were to become a state, it would have the highest rate of violent crime in the United States (per the DOJ), the highest rate of out of wedlock birth (35-40%), and the highest rate of WIC card usage (a slight majority of the population uses the WIC to buy groceries).
4. Do we REALLY want a Third World majority Spanish-speaking country of 4 Million to join the union?
5. It is a fact that poor, nonwhite peoples do NOT vote Republican. The median income in PR is $17,000 and its economy is heavily dependent on military bases and subsidies to the pharmaceutical industry.
Your IDIOT Congressman has proven himself to be a dunce by quoting PNP party propaganda at you. Hold his feet to the fire!

Fortuno is a Republican in Name Only, a la Bloomberg. The Pay-Nay-Pays caucus with whichever party they think will give them more bennies and a rigged vote on statehood. In the words of my favorite cinematic Cuban, Pay-Nay-Pays are COCKAROACHES!
