Does your wife own a 12 ga?

To whom it may concern. If your wife does not own a 12 ga, you may need to buy her one for her birthday.

I recently took a job that keeps me away from home most of the time. My wife had many nights of sleeplessness due to fear, agnst, and lack of self confidence when she is alone at night.

Long story short. I bought her a short barreled 12ga and it is loaded with low recoil buckshot.

She and I practiced with HER shotgun with light dove loads for several weeks.

The 12ga sleeps on my side of the bed when I'm not at home and she sleeps soundly now, she fears no living being. Here is a poem I really like:

******************************************

It's all a tale of living, of what a man can be. I'll pass it on from my life, so maybe you can see. There's very few things that can't get done With five hunnerd dollars and a pump shotgun.

It's been passed on to me, from father to the kid. Sometimes you have to stand tall, sometimes you best be hid.

But a man can always stand tall, he never has to run

With five hunnerd dollars and a pump shotgun.

There's times when life is fearful, there's times that aren't so good. When a man does what he has to, when he does just what he should.

But he can keep his house warm, his place there in the sun With five hunnerd dollars and a pump shotgun.

One night the prisoners broke out, a few had rushed the gate. And Daddy heard that they were coming, heading down the interstate.

But they didn't stop at our house, they continued on the run Cause Dad was on the front porch with a pump shotgun.

Sometimes my Dad worked overtime, sometimes from out of state

My Momma didn't worry when the old man got in late She knew where Daddy kept them, could grab them on the run She had five hunnerd dollars and a pump shotgun.

It didn't matter what the trouble, didn't matter what the cause, If a kid got sick or the roof blew off, it didn't give her pause.

If a wolf got in the chickens, just trying to have some fun Mom would greet him warmly with a pump shotgun.

And when I started my house, with a baby on the way Dad came by one evening, said what he had to say "Remember all your lessons, and do what must be done.

Here's five hunnerd dollars and a pump shotgun."

I would also suggest a dog. A gun isn’t much good if you don’t have an alert system. A protective dog is about the best there is.

A small yippy dog will wake somebody up w/shotgun too.

We used to have a few 12 gauges, and some 20 gauges scattered through the house, along with a 38 special and a Smith M&P.

Unfortunately, they were all lost in a tragic fishing accident.

I already tried that with my wife. She admitted that she didn’t think she could shoot someone, even to save her life. The last thing I need is dead wife and a criminal on the loose with her shotgun. Women are programmed to be the nurturers and men are programmed to be the warriors, although you couldn’t tell in some progressive households.

Yes a dog and a gun is a good combination. A dog that will raise an alarm will give you time to get your weapon ready. A dog alone can be easily killed by a dangerous person, a weapon alone does you no good if you are soundly asleep and an intruder gets the drop on you. A great do will at least slow down a bad person long enough for you to fill that person with lead.

We have a couple of 12 gauge shotguns. A Remington 870 and a Saiga 12. I really love taking the wife out to the range and having her burn through a 20rnd drum. Don’t know if she’s hitting what she’s shooting at, I suppose you would almost have to TRY to miss with that much lead going down range. lol

Do you have children? Many women that think they can’t shoot someone would in a heartbeat to save their children. At least see if you can get her to practice target shooting and maybe when she feels more comfortable with a weapon if the need arises she may change her mind.

Story that's been handed around a few times, but always good for a chuckle:

A young lady friend discovered the tactical utility of Dragon's Breath rounds last night... She was at home with her two young kids, while her husband (LE type) was on late duty. A couple of gang-bangers decided this was a good night to break in, and a bit after 11 p.m., when the family was in bed, they broke in through the living-room window. She heard the noise they made, and grabbed her husband's Mossberg Model 500, which he kept by the bedside for her use when he wasn't at home. She went to the door leading to the living-room, and saw one of the gang-bangers just inside the window, helping his friend through. She raised the shotgun and fired one round at the guy inside.

What she didn't know was that her husband had been playing around with his shotgun a couple of days earlier, along with some of his buddies. He'd left the shotgun loaded with a Dragon's Breath round up the spout, a Screamer next, and a Bird Bomb third in line. When she touched off the first round, a gout of flame enveloped the entire window area, scorching and blackening both intruders, and doing all sorts of nasty things to her curtains. She screamed in shock, but didn't drop the shotgun - racked the action and let off another round. A ghastly demonic wail was heard in the land as this round went straight out the window and down the driveway.

The two gang-bangers stood not upon the order of their going... apparently they broke several land speed records heading down the driveway, screaming loudly all the way (as in "Bleep! WHAT THE BLEEP-BLEEP-BLEEP WAS THAT???"). She called 911, and her husband and other cops arrived within minutes. The other cops then had the pleasure of listening to her tell her husband (in words of approximately one syllable, for ten minutes, without repeating herself) what she thought of a partner who would load a defensive weapon with rounds like that! Apparently they (the other cops) were doubled over, helpless with laughter, while her husband shrank by the minute!

They didn't catch the BG's, but according to the cops, they're probably still running, and should be across the Arkansas border by now (it's only about 150 miles north of here). I understand that domestic harmony, of a sort, has been restored in the household of my friends, but that the husband will be spending time and money replacing curtains and cleaning up scorch marks on the paintwork...

For those who may not know about Dragon's Breath rounds, here's a picture.

Thought I would share for the thread :)

Very true. We have a couple of dogs that tend to bark at the grass growing. Dogs WILL let you know if someone is around, especially little dogs.

Rather than a shotgun, consider a high capacity pistol, or short barreled carbine. At in-home ranges, you need to aim your shotgun as carefully as a pistol or rifle; better to consider multiple shots considering you WILL miss with a vast majority of your shots, and capacity is always welcome.

Also the recoil - even with light-loads - of a shottie is considerably higher than a pistol or carbine. And the noise and flash is quite higher as well, disorienting the shooter and the target.

My recommendation is usually a high capacity DAO pistol, or a 5.56mm carbine; 16+ rounds on tap is a good starting point. And a 5.56mm with soft points has less overpenetration problems than a 12 GA with 00 buckshot.

we are all different,

my wife was very hesitant at first, the noise and recoil, but my wife now smiles as she pumps the next round into the chamber. She LOVES blasting watermelons..I have no doubt, this girl would pull the trigger.

Get your wife one anyway, better to have the choice, than not. PS, women in a crunch, will surprise you.

This woman is programmed to shoot if necessary.

I do agree that certain women are not cut out for handling firearms.

No, she has a .410, a .38 and a 7.62 X 54R. Never a worry.

It would be a shame to have to shoot the perps while that dog is in the line of fire.

Plan carefully.

A good dog can be hard to replace (but not nearly as hard as a family member).

No, it was a friends houseboat. And, as a matter of fact there were a lot of people on that houseboat that day, and they all lost their firearms, too.

The darnedest thing, that!

We’ve got 6 cats and a dog, so she’ll have to use the AR-15 instead. Otherwise, we’d be picking buckshot out of cats for weeks.
