CNN's Paul Begala on Blumenthal Vietnam Lie: "It is Indefensible; A Catastrophic Mistake" - Video
Freedom's Lighthouse ^ | May 18, 2010 | Brian

Posted on 05/18/2010 4:16:02 AM PDT by Federalist Patriot

Here is video of CNN's Paul Begala and Anderson Cooper discussing the news that Democrat U.S. Senate Candidate Richard Blumenthal has repeatedly lied about having served in the military "in Vietnam." Begala said it is "indefensible" if in fact - as it appears to be - that he never served in Vietnam.

BEGALA: "There is no good or ethical reason that he could have done that, Anderson. Uh, the guy ought to have a chance to respond. I saw the Times story as well. . . . You read those four words - 'I served in Vietnam.' That appears to be factually false. It is indefensible. It is a catastrophic mistake because it's not the sort of mistake people tend to make."

Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve, but never served "in Vietnam," as he has claimed on numerous times that he did.

For the NY Slimes to do this story to me...means it is a pre-emptive strike to get him out and replace him while there is still time to get another candidate. They knew it would come out later.

If Bill Clinton had made this claim, Begala would filibuster into tomorrow justifying it. I think Begala in fact DID argue for Hillary’s delusional claim that she came under sniper fire in Kosovo.

The man's military record was already known and hard to keep secret. He simply misspoke ~ and probably not for the first time either.

However, the New York Times is not really attacking him. Rather, they are simply attacking the Washington Post.

You have to read slowly through the part where they relate his career. You'll find ".....serve as a special assistant to The Washington Post’s publisher, Katharine Graham;....." and there it is.

His mistake, as a tool of the Washington Post community, was to run for office in the NYT bailiwick.

“Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve...”

Can someone explain to me how you can be in the Reserve without actually having been, in this case, in the Marines?

I thought the Reserve services were made up of people who had been in the Service and are now, you know, on “Reserve”.

Or am I just suffering from “didn’t read the whole article” syndrome?

I’m sorry this man is a liar, or exagerator, but it is good news for us because I think he was supposed to be their best candidate. It’s kind of surprising this never came out before, I mean he ran for office and was elected several times.

And it is a stupid thing to lie about, it is easy to check and it really offends people.

Blumenthal must have a skeleton in his closet, like is pro life or something that defies the orthodoxy of the dimrat party. Otherwise they would treat him like the other elected dims they campaign for. They hid/ignored much more about obummer to get him elected and now they are turning on a potential vote for their agenda.

“If Bill Clinton had made this claim, Begala would filibuster into tomorrow justifying it.”

Likewise, where was Paul Begala when Obama uttered lie after unbelievable lie regarding the health reform bill? Why weren’t these lies equally “indefensible” or “catastrophic”? Some lies apparently are more “equal” than others and Paul Begala apparently has the good sense to recognize the difference. Thus, while his condemnation of Blumenthal’s lying is admirable in one sense, it is what Begala ISN’T willing to say about Obama’s lies that makes it clear that Begala remains part of the problem in the donkey party, not the solution.

It is a matter of honor for all military to be honest about their combat service record.

It’s not appropriate for a Vietnam “era” vet to pass himself off as a vet with Vietnam “service” if he never stepped foot in that country.

I’ll get shot at for this, but I don’t consider anything to be a tour unless you put actual feet on the ground. If you float by or fly over the Tonkin of some other contiguous body of water, then you are NOT, in my opinion, a vet with Viet service.

One of the recent scandals devaluing combat service was the Bosnia/Kosovo decisions to award “broze stars” to support troops who never put foot in those countries but sat at desks in Italy or elsewhere.

I’m in favor of ending all “service” awards of the broze star and requiring that in the future the bronze star be for combat valor and nothing else. The Silver Star is already so limited.

An MSM or LOM with a narrative explaining “for service in a combat zone” is better alternative. After all, they already are the service equivalent of those combat awards. Let’s not devalue our combat medals.

For Begala, the defender of the clintons, to come out like this means orders came from high in the dem regime.

He was in the Marine Corps, but he never went to Vietnam. He could claim “interpretation” on some of his statements. He said when “we” came back from Vietnam, which he’ll probably argue that “we” meant The United States. There are other quotes that are more specific, but there’s enough weasel room for the left to give him a pass and scream and yell about George Bush a few times, too.

6 years is the time to serve..after a 3 year stint on active duty you are sent an inactive reserve status for 3 years.

You can do 6 years in an active reserve unit without going anywhere.

Congress is the culprit.

You can disagree with my argument all you want, but it's the ONLY ONE that addresses the question of why the New York Times ran the story.

Ordinarily the NYT would ignore this sort of thing, or bury it, unless it involved a Republican.

Democrats who run for office within the primary circulation area of the NYT best not have relations with OTHER newspapers. I'm not even sure they tolerate folks from TV.

“Courageous restraint” = “Death Wish”

They should call it the “Suicide Medal”

I thought McChrystal would be like his brother. To date, seems to me he’s been busy rubbing it off his nose.

The US Army has worked for a couple years to lower their sucide rate among deployed/post-deployed soldiers. McChrystal has the solution: self-restraint suicides overseas. Make ‘em look like combat deaths.

Suicide medal with oak leaf clusters.

Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve, but never served "in Vietnam," as he has claimed on numerous times that he did.

I saw the video of Blumenthal saying he served in Vietnam. I too served in the Marine Corps Reserve and never went near Vietnam. I served with and was trained by Vietnam combat veterans.

For Blumenthal to say, point blank, that he served in Vietnam is not an, "Oops, I misspoke," kind of mistake. It is a brazen lie and it is stolen valor. This p.o.s. Blumenthal should be in jail.

Darn, by your Vietnam service 'standard' I just don't know how to catagorize my late Father's combat service which consisted of two tours to Vietnam. He was not US Army, nor Marines - so he did not perform the 'ground-pounder' role which seems to be the only legitimate qualification for your standard of combat service in Vietnam. You see, he never "put actual feet on the ground".

However, during his two combat tours to the Vietnam theatre, he was regularly flung off the deck of two U.S. Navy carriers (with his RIO) in an F-4B as part of the U.S. Navy Fighter Squadron VF-96. Both he and his RIO, plus all others in VF-96 were shot at on a regular basis since when they were not used as a MiG CAP, they were employed to drop 500lb bombs on well defended NVA targets, just as did their sister U.S. Navy Attack Squadrons. But perhaps since he did overfly the Gulf of Tonkin, was never shot down, just shot at over North Vietnam - this does not meet your standard of 'legitimate' combat service in Vietnam.

I knew I’d get shot at for that, but your father would qualify for combat operations participated in.

I’m referring to John Kerry’s so-called tour in which he floated by Vietnam. He had the famous one in which he received rice wounds in his ass, but my memory says there was a float by.

That’s what I mean by “float-by.” A “fly-by” would be similar.
