CNN's Paul Begala on Blumenthal Vietnam Lie: "It is Indefensible; A Catastrophic Mistake" - Video

Here is video of CNN's Paul Begala and Anderson Cooper discussing the news that Democrat U.S. Senate Candidate Richard Blumenthal has repeatedly lied about having served in the military "in Vietnam." Begala said it is "indefensible" if in fact - as it appears to be - that he never served in Vietnam.

BEGALA: "There is no good or ethical reason that he could have done that, Anderson. Uh, the guy ought to have a chance to respond. I saw the Times story as well. . . . You read those four words - 'I served in Vietnam.' That appears to be factually false. It is indefensible. It is a catastrophic mistake because it's not the sort of mistake people tend to make."

Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve, but never served "in Vietnam," as he has claimed on numerous times that he did.

There has to be a reason that consecutive administrations of different parties adopt the same open border polices. There has to be some common denominator.

“If Bill Clinton had made this claim, Begala would filibuster into tomorrow justifying it.”

Likewise, where was Paul Begala when Obama uttered lie after unbelievable lie regarding the health reform bill? Why weren’t these lies equally “indefensible” or “catastrophic”? Some lies apparently are more “equal” than others and Paul Begala apparently has the good sense to recognize the difference. Thus, while his condemnation of Blumenthal’s lying is admirable in one sense, it is what Begala ISN’T willing to say about Obama’s lies that makes it clear that Begala remains part of the problem in the donkey party, not the solution.

It is a matter of honor for all military to be honest about their combat service record.

It’s not appropriate for a Vietnam “era” vet to pass himself off as a vet with Vietnam “service” if he never stepped foot in that country.

I’ll get shot at for this, but I don’t consider anything to be a tour unless you put actual feet on the ground. If you float by or fly over the Tonkin of some other contiguous body of water, then you are NOT, in my opinion, a vet with Viet service.

One of the recent scandals devaluing combat service was the Bosnia/Kosovo decisions to award “broze stars” to support troops who never put foot in those countries but sat at desks in Italy or elsewhere.

I’m in favor of ending all “service” awards of the broze star and requiring that in the future the bronze star be for combat valor and nothing else. The Silver Star is already so limited.

An MSM or LOM with a narrative explaining “for service in a combat zone” is better alternative. After all, they already are the service equivalent of those combat awards. Let’s not devalue our combat medals.

His mistake, as a tool of the Washington Post community, was to run for office in the NYT bailiwick.

I disagree. There is more to this. Blumie must have pissed off someone in the Obama admin although I can't find it.

For Begala, the defender of the clintons, to come out like this means orders came from high in the dem regime.

He was in the Marine Corps, but he never went to Vietnam. He could claim “interpretation” on some of his statements. He said when “we” came back from Vietnam, which he’ll probably argue that “we” meant The United States. There are other quotes that are more specific, but there’s enough weasel room for the left to give him a pass and scream and yell about George Bush a few times, too.

Have you heard about the new medal for "courageous restraint". I kid you not.

6 years is the time to serve..after a 3 year stint on active duty you are sent an inactive reserve status for 3 years.

You can do 6 years in an active reserve unit without going anywhere.

Congress is the culprit.

You can disagree with my argument all you want, but it's the ONLY ONE that addresses the question of why the New York Times ran the story.

Ordinarily the NYT would ignore this sort of thing, or bury it, unless it involved a Republican.

Democrats who run for office within the primary circulation area of the NYT best not have relations with OTHER newspapers. I'm not even sure they tolerate folks from TV.

“Courageous restraint” = “Death Wish”

They should call it the “Suicide Medal”

I thought McChrystal would be like his brother. To date, seems to me he’s been busy rubbing it off his nose.

The US Army has worked for a couple years to lower their sucide rate among deployed/post-deployed soldiers. McChrystal has the solution: self-restraint suicides overseas. Make ‘em look like combat deaths.

Suicide medal with oak leaf clusters.

I think the medal should show the coffins will carry the bodies of his dead buddies.
