I don’t have a problem with their unwavering faith in God. But I think they are mistaken when they assume God would sanction an endeavor like this. Christainity is promoting Christ and doing things that would glorify Him. I don’t see where this action which I would call selfserving, has anything to do with promoting the Word of God.

“STUPID” analogy.

If you HAVE a teen age daughter, do you let her drive - out there on the highway where there are several thousand killed each year - and HUNDREDS of thousands injured?

Exactly, If she set sail as a missionary to spread the Word, and they prayed about it and God gave the go ahead, that would be different because He would protect her no matter what she faced. My problem is it was a frivolous venture that had nothing to do with God.

God may have helped save her life, but HE doesn’t protect us from making foolish decisions in the first place. That’s the way I see it.

you post: “I am totally behind Abby and the parents on this one. She had the training and the experience and the equipment to do this. The fact that the mast was destroyed yet Abby came through it just fine tells us that this was no foolhardy publicity-seeking stunt. It was a well-trained athlete attempting to do something she loved and wanted to do using equipment which would keep her safe in the event of a possible accident. The accident occurred and she came through it just fine.

Go Abby! Don't let the life-suckers keep you from safely pursuing your goals!!!!”

Thank you.

I was about to give up on freepers - really sad and - well, IGNORANT - posts here.

There's a lot of Freepers that must be keeping their teens safely confined to their homes - surely, they wouldn't be as irresponsible as to let them DRIVE out there on the highways...s/

How wonderful to know who God will and won't protect. Must be awesome to know God's mind.

So if she was a missionary, God would have kept her safe, "no matter what"?

Hmmm - What happened to these guys?

http://www.plymouthbrethren.org/article/545

and countless other missionaries who have been slain while on missions?

What does her ‘born again’ status have to do with any of this?

If someone prays about a mission and get an answer from God saying He will protect them, then He will, plain and simple.

So are you saying, empirically, that the case of the missionaries I posted, plus the countless other missionaries that have lost their lives over the years - didn't pray for protection?

ARe you forgetting that Jesus prayed to have "this cup" passed from him? (But He knew God's contract with us a bit better - and added the caveat "They Will be done."

I STILL suspicion you may not have the last word on what God's will is - I notice you didn't offer an explanation on why so many missionaries have been killed - even tho they surely must pray for protection ad do their sponsoring churches.

I’ve had teenaged daughters and son...they didn’t go out on the highway after 10PM until they were adults.

If you think the dangers of the southern seas in winter are comparable to the danger on US highways...you are NUTS! Highly experienced sailors don’t tackle a round-the-world solo trip without trepidation, and they have far more experience than Abby.

Nor do I allow my kids to participate in attempts to set records driving - not speed, not distance, not ‘longest solo trip by a 16 year old in a car’, etc.

Riding horses is always dangerous, but I do it and encourage my kids to do so - but with gradations. I don’t put my daughter on a vicious horse, or encourage her to try to set a record for the highest jump by a teen girl, or other STUPID things.

Risk for a reason is appropriate. Risk for s stunt is stupid. Risk for a TV show is disgusting.

And if the team sponsor was thinking reality show...well, that’s a California thing afterall.

Oh no you don't....They're evilllllll....Ya hear?....Parents need to be in prison for child endangerment...Where are the authorities! That poor girl has been brainwashed and infected by balloon boy syndrome!!!

All they think of is fame and fortune...Burn them! Buuuuuuuurn them!

The “Oh, well, its in God’s hands” Christians are using God as an excuse to do what they want to do. I just hope they don’t blame him when he chooses not to save one of their meal tickets.

That answers your question right there. Gods will. Sometimes people ignore Gods will. All those missionaries that were killed? Maybe they ignored Gods will. The Sunderlands said they prayed about it and had faith that it was ok to do this. Maybe God caused the failure and sent help in order to tell the Sunderlands that it wasn't meant to be. Who knows. The Lord works in mysterious ways. And things don't always work out the way we think it should. Maybe God didn't want them to do this for naught.
