When the Free Republic said that Stalin had killed 40 million, I’m going to repeat a quote a freeper said about Stalin as it applies to Mao: “Mao may have killed 45 million, but he never put a woman’s panties on a guy’s head (the remark was in reference to Abu Gharib and the criticism George W. Bush received about it).”
The seven million extra deaths would move Chang’s 2005 total of “more than 70 million” into the neighborhood of 80 million, padding Mao’s lead over Stalin and Hitler as the worst mass murderer in human history.But that's not taking into account population differences. If you factor those in, Mao can be viewed as somewhat of a moderate.
