She was talking to Glenn Beck in January and brought up how she admired Washington because he didn’t want the job of President but was obliged to do it and was perfectly happy to be at Mt. Vernon...she’s running alright! ( meeting those 50 conservatives coming across the country to Palm springs explaining her positions to them sealed the deal for me)

Supposedly Madison had to work back channels to convince Washington to do it. He thought once the war was over he could retire.

I like the story of Washington finally leaving public life for good at the Adams innauguration. Adams gets sworn in, Washington leans in to him and says, "Now I am fairly out and you are fairly in! See which of us will be the happiest!"

I visited the room where that took place in Philadelphia. It was the last time that Washington, Adams, and Jefferson were all in the same room at the same time.
