Freep-a-thon- Give a minimum of $10 OR admit you believe in Welfare 'cause someone's paying for You

We all know that every one of us is going to blow ten bucks at McDonalds, Wendys, someplace in the next 24 hours.

That's why it's simply not believable that everyone can't send at least ten bucks.

It's election season and you're going to get no better election info and discussion than here on Free Republic. It's just a fact.

Let's knock this freep-a-thon out and get fully into the campaign.

BTW, my sense is that the lawsuit against Free Republic should make us MORE determined to protect this treasure that Jim & John have provided us in FR. No one's said anything, but lawyers cost extra cash. A major equipment crash and burn a while back costs extra cash. This is all to say that there's a real need.

Finally, there is no other discussion and response software anyplace that even comes close to what the Robinsons have created. And it's exclusively available to conservatives.

A minimum of 10 bucks, folks.

Othewise you admit that you believe in Welfare, because someone else is paying for your time here.

Don’t buy it, KOI.

EVERYONE can afford 10 bucks every 3 months.

Just don’t buy it.

throwing the “bigotry” word around as a first line of defense makes me think “liberal knee-jerk reaction.”

‘We all know that every one of us is going to blow ten bucks at McDonalds, Wendys, someplace in the next 24 hours.’

Really? How pray tell do WE KNOW that? My family eats out MAYBE once a year.

“That’s why it’s simply not believable that everyone can’t send at least ten bucks.”

Not believing something does not make that something untrue.

“It’s election season and you’re going to get no better election info and discussion than here on Free Republic. It’s just a fact.”

I agree, that’s why I am here. I don’t watch TV and I don’t trust the newspapers.

Good points

Being conservative does not equate to automatically having disposable income. Yes, I have a computer (that my father bought for me about 6 years ago). Yes, I have internet. I have given up television and newspaper in order to afford it. I also homeschool my kids, make my house payment and pay my taxes on a fixed income. We simply cannot cut out anything else from our budget.

And I’m getting bashed for saying everyone can afford about 10.8 cents a day.

Less than honest people who claim they can’t come up with 10.8 cents a day.

Well, I believe in capitalism and paying for something of value.

I would much rather “suffer” the indignity of seeing a few ads running down the side of FR (like every other website I frequent) than listening to the ubiquitous begging for handouts.

This business model is flawed. Mr. Robinson likes to brag about the millions of page views, etc...well that would be great information to present to potential advertisers, who would pay to have their product or service placed in front of all those eyeballs.

Drudge and Brietbart seem to be able to stay on line without constantly asking for donations. I love Free Republic and it is the way I start my day every morning...it has been my “homepage” for over ten years (even through the years I was banned for gripping about McCain winning the nomination)

People who enjoy this website without sending money to it are not advocates of welfare. This business model is very unusual in today’s marketplace. It operates almost s a church, passing the plate every three months.

I am donating today (admittedly a very small donation) because I do love this site, but these Freepathons are really tiresome...and I wish Mr. Robinson would find another way to fund this operation, using ingenuity and free market capitalist concepts rather than than begging his “customers” for “donations.”

If you have a product of value (you obviously do)you should be able to sell it with out problem. Sites that you have to pay a fee to view don’t work well in this new medium, but advertising seems to keep a lot of less popular sites afloat just fine.

Sorry for the long rant and I hope I don’t get banned (again) for expressing my views...I’m off to make my donation.

Just a question, sfimom. What will you read if one day JimRob packs it in because the expense of fighting lawsuits and government intrusion becomes overwhelming? Just something to think about.

You’ve descended your ivory tower only to mount a high-horse and look down upon those you feel are less than you because they may not be able to donate as you see fit... you are a bigot.

You don’t have to. That’s the wonderful thing about facts. They are what they are and your belief or disbelief does not change them.

Weather or not I wil have anything to read or not if FR were to shut down does not change my budget. I (and I’m sure others here) have zero wiggle room and it is only going to get worse.

I honestly do not get it. Why put your subscribers through this pain every quarter?

The site is large enough to pay expenses through advertising and maybe even put some money in your pocket, capitalism works and this is the only site I visit that does not have it.

Advertising to me was only a pain when I was on dial up and it slowed the page loading, now I barely notice it on any site. A freeperthon is more distracting to me than advertising by a long shot

Better yet charge your subscribers $10 a year and do the advertising, all this freeperthon stuff is just dithering around and wasting time. It’s like you guys feel like making money is a bad thing, all this purity stuff is misguided IMHO - make a buck and may god smile on you

////Pay-site probably would eliminate 90% of the trolls

Even 10 year old americans come up with over 10 bucks per quarter.

True, but I'd also guess that YOU'D be in a financial position that YOU could kick in an extra $1,000 this quarter, just to help cover the one-time cost of the lawsuit.

Instead, I'm guessing you find it less painful to try to shame those of us who have been driving their car with a blown-out muffler since June. That had a mental debate for several minutes in the grocery store this week before deciding to splurge just this once on the pricier brand of hotdogs. That the high point of their day was finding both the peanut butter AND the Oscar Mayer bologna on sale.

Perhaps I’m just lucky, but although I am also on a fixed (retired) income, if I need something extra, I do something extra to generate more income. It might be some babysitting, holding a yard sale, or maybe selling some (gently read) books on amazon. Sometimes I get a nice little freelance writing contract—if I look for one. I wouldn’t waste my time or anyone else’s making excuses for why I can’t do something, when with the same effort, I might actually find a way to make it possible. But that’s me, and you’re you. Everyone’s different, with different priorities.

glad your accepting the responsibility

using advertisers gives someone leverage. it also is clear income for selling space.

I’m not sure how a donation would get treated differently...if it would.

With all due respect, The things that we need far outweigh what our income actually is. Every extra penny I am able to make and save is going to much needed repairs on our home. A yard sale (which we have already had) or a bit of babysitting (which I cannot do as I am caring for 3 disabled individuals and homeschooling my children) won’t be enough to cover what we NEED let alone anything extra. I am constantly looking for a way to make a bit of extra cash so don’t lecture me about not wasting my time or effort to explain why not everyone can afford to DONATE to this site no matter how beloved it is.

I’ve been a dollar a day donor and a five dollar a month donor and a non donor. Just depended on what was going on at the time.

It’s like you guys feel

I am not now, nor have I ever been, in any role or position of responsibility with FR. I don't speak for them, think for them, or do anything for them, and I never have.

This particular forum on FR is "bloggers and personal." I wrote it, and I posted it, and it's my personal opinion and initiative.

Also, why not charge fees and accept advertising? Maybe it gets handled differently if it's income instead of donations. And that might cause an entire range of headaches. Just a thought, but I don't know.
