Which is preferable;
1. The advantages of easily climbing the social ladder in a poor nation (like cab drivers of India do)
2. The disadvantages of being poor and sticking to the device of "Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope" (like certain Mexican Americans do)
3. The predictability of being an average citizen going to an average mall in an average PC corner of the World (like most Stockholmers enjoy doing)

BTW,I have been in East LA thousands upon thousands of time. It is not bad at all. As well as having some of best Mexican food establishments anywhere.

- I’ve been to “bad” parts of Miami (upon visiting Fla in 1991), “bad” neigborhoods of London (like Brixton in the 1980s) as well as the worst parts of Berlin, Naples, Copenhagen, Malmö, Manchester, Copenhagen etc several of times.
There is, indeed, a good reason why these neighborhoods have a bad name, but in the media things tend to get blown out of proportion like we all know.
I once had a jolly good walk in the slums of Istanbul past midnight and while doing so I didn’t see a trace of crime anywhere (Turkish police are known for being overly brutal, but effective, they say). I wouldn’t exactly recommend lone women to do so, but often the real dangers confronting us in life do not appear where we expect to find them (not meaning to say enemies of Western Civilization like Islamism and Communism are no major threats).
I’m sure I’ll enjoy eating my way through East LA.
In reality, there is no upward mobility in India. The “caste” system has never really left India....most of the the Indians you see in this country come from the higher classes...castes
The analogies would have been good if the one about India was accurate.

(By the way, I live in a working class/lower middle class suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden. IMO, life here is very safe and secure, yet close enough to a rather big city and the bustling European Continent to avoid being labeled “dull”).

- My impression from having visited India (in 2002), doing business (on a very modest level) with a company in India and meeting with lots of people of Indian origin outside of India is that there definitely is upward mobility in India of today, even if the caste system is omnipresent and individual progress in terms of achieving a higher status in the field of economy, more or less, is limited to big cities.
Stop being rude and disgusting. If you don’t like it, why do you continue to live there. You can move ... or are you living in Mommy’s basement?

Perhaps it’s true that East LA, in may ways, is friendly and a far better place than the media constantly keep on telling the World outside this corner of America through papers, movies and the Internet.
Suppose it’s also true that “East LA is a cesspool over-flowing with illegal aliens, gangbangers, and teen-age mommies, all of whom are ignorant, racist, self-entitled, worthless scum.”
What does that leave us with?
1. The crime rate and the “low life” ratio of East La is higher than the American average - True
2. It still is a place where friendship, ambitions and love daily makes progress - Also true

This was true in the ghettos of medieval parts of Europe haunted by the Black Death like Florence, Italy in the 14th century, a city that refused to simply lie down and die, a city that decades later gave humanity the Renaissance.
Both shutting your eyes to evil as well as not letting hope in is destructive acts.
A crucial aspect is to what degree a given population understands this.

I've traveled around a lot myself and enjoyed some of the best moments of my life when visiting other countries, learning about other their way of life and meeting foreigners at their “home base”.
In accordance with this spirit, I'm always interested of getting in touch with people who've visited my Scandinavia, are planning to do so as well as persons visiting anew.
I presume large parts of America have changed a lot since I went their for vacation in 1991 and likewise I believe Sweden will seem quite different to you compared to the place you experienced back in the early 1980s.
