Carter says a similar kind of tea party movement help elect him

No. What is now called the Religious Right did not exist until after Carter, many of them were Democrats who believed he was the strong Christian he professed to be and supported his election in droves, then, once elected, he turned on them and they supported Reagan in the next election. So, in a way he is partially correct, but he also proved you can only fool someone once otherwise even your strongest supporters will turn on you.

Jimmy Carter was not a model of any kind of a respectable world leader. But how he got the Presidency was an amazing story. he basically went to a snowy Iowa with limited cash and camped out all winter going door to door.

"Was the Tea Party around in 1976"

In a way, it was. One reason Carter was elected was that the Evangelical Christians, or the Religious Right supported Carter. Pat Robertson was a big supporter at that time. Also, the Reagan Republicans sat out that election in droves. I know because I was one of those...

Hah. In 1976 there was a general revulsion against fraudulent and dishonest government, which Carter played to the fullest ("Ah'll nevah lah to yew" he whelped, lying even as he said it).

Like Clinton, Carter was also lucky in who his opponent was, a hapless placeholder named Gerald Ford, a decent and respectable but very limited man who had no business in the White House.

If there had been a Tea party in 1976, Reagan would have been elected four years earlier. He damn near made it as it was.

Yeah Jerry Ford was not a very inspirational Republican.

And Jimmy Carter (along with the MSM) did a GREAT job of disguising his left wing sympathies. Back then the MSM had a lot of control on information - no conservative talk radio and the internet.

I’m not sure what to make of Carter’s comments. I just don’t like the guy. Some democrats want Sarah to run because they think they can beat her, and he could be one of them.
