Doubt-full. Most likely just a vague acquaintance they met up with for a ride to the station.
Buddies do not call the cops on one another. They do what it takes to remove the buddy from the situation.
It wasn't "instant". He stopped after several blows to calmly close the car door, then continued more blows, then the pepper spray while the drunks on the ground. Doesn't sound like grabbing the ankles was the major issue. At that point the cop only has a complaint and a DWI, which may be a misdemeanor, depending upon state law. True friends would have got him home before all that happened, again, depending upon the political persuasion and I.Q. of the cop.

If he had he also would have received a beat down.
The police in this country have been empowered to the point that individuals fear them, law abiding or otherwise. I do not like it!

OK. So you're attempting to justify the additional hitting of this guy after he drags him through the open window of the car. How many times did he hit him? I didn't count, but let's say it was six, for argument sake.
Try and justify the first one.
Now try and justify the pepper spray.
This cop should be fired, charged and after being found guilty placed in the general population of a prison.
This “cops” situational awareness is for $hit. Looks like a setup to me. Waiting for his name to be released.....
That’s sickening.
Bad juju for the drunk. Keep hitting him.
Sorry, if he is GRABBING the cop, thats an instant *ss whoopin. The cop doesnt know what the drunk is going to do. And he shouldnt have to risk his life to find out.
I back the blue, but I also dont cotten to bad apples.
Sounds like this officer was just trying to protect himself. Drunk was lucky. Could have received a fatal dose of lead poisoning.
Agreed. Nothing worse than a stupid drunk person who hasn’t had enough of something. That cop was justified in beating the hell out of this stupid punk. The fact that his friends placidly watched it, almost emotion-less, tells me they felt the same way.
Drunk people generally suck.
Have you seen what passes for graduates from cop school these days? Oh, I’m sorry! It’s called Criminal Justice School. I’m a little confused by the wording because justice is something that the judge mediates, and criminal is an assumption of a yet undetermined status which needs future analysis by a third party.
“Sorry, if he is GRABBING the cop, thats an instant *ss whoopin. The cop doesnt know what the drunk is going to do. And he shouldnt have to risk his life to find out.”
Typical sob story from power-drunk cops.
Everybody knows when/where the use of force is appropriate. Unfortunately, today’s cops are usually in the donut shop when those crimes go down. Instead they choose to exhibit power when faced with people driving 5 mph over the speed limit or other nuisance complaints.
A few bad apples, please.
The officer grabbed him and tried to get him to come out of the car. The guy fell onto his chest and locked his arms around this officer's ankles and would not let go," Platke said. Ries "was there with his feet locked together, screaming at this guy to let go. He used his baton to try to hit him to get him to let go. He finally had to use (pepper spray) and the guy finally let go."Blaine Thompson, 21, of south St. Louis County, said he was the designated driver for the man who was beaten and two friends. He would not identify his friends but said they were cooperating with the police investigation.
Thompson said Ries had been justified to "take action." As for the use of force, he said, "It's not really my call."
.
Agree
If you have video.
Subsequent info indicates the drunk grabbed the cops ankles/legs when he was put on the ground -and- refused to let go all through the cop’s baton strikes. Supposedly, he only let go when pepper-sprayed. The camera operator kept the drunks actions out of the frame. I don’t think it was intentional, just unfortunate that the video will be presumed to relay the “whole truth”.
I have no concern for obnoxious drunks and I think his friends should have kicked his butt for putting them in that situation.
That said, the cop’s judgement, discretion, officer-safety awareness and physical abilities are *HIGHLY* questionable. The drunk was loud & mouthy, but his resistance should have been easily overcome. If that cop (bigger than the drunk & presumably adequately trained) can’t handle that particular example of a beligerant drunk, he doesn’t belong on the street. Put him behind a desk (presuming he isn’t charged and still has a job).
Nearly all take-downs put you in a position with the suspect proned out on his belly with the officer’s knees on the suspect’s back. At that point, pain-compliance techniques (joint-locks, pressure-points, etc) can be employed to get the suspect to comply with being cuffed. The drunk was down on his belly and had grabbed the cops ankles. The cop didn’t seem wobbly or about to fall. I have to wonder why he didn’t thank the drunk for triggering a training memory; dropping his knees on the drunk’s back and cuffing him.
But beyond all that, the *most* worrisome to me is the piss-poor officer-safety he demonstrated. I saw no urgency that would have left the officer no choice but to lay hands on the guy before at least one cover officer arrived. That cop better thank his lucky stars the drunk’s buddies chose not to help him out. Had they chose differently, the cop would be seriously hurt or dead and some dumb@$$es would have his gun and whatever else they wanted to loot out of his patrol car. Who knows what would happen then when the next officer (or victim) encountered them.
You protect yourself from a beating by putting your arms up, not grabbing the officers ankles, would that be your first reflex?
Reading comprehension problems people?
From post #5:
“What you cannot see in the video that witnesses who could see the whole thing testified to is that the guy kept grabbing the officer?s ankles trying to knock him down and that is why he kept hitting him.”
What part of “that witnesses who could see the whole thing testified to” is hard?
“I have to wonder why he didnt thank the drunk for triggering a training memory;
dropping his knees on the drunks back and cuffing him.
That cop better thank his lucky stars the drunks buddies chose not to help him out”
Could be why he didn’t “prone him out”.
Unsubstantiated reports indicate that the guy was obnoxiously drunk and his friends (the civilian group around the cop) asked the proprietor to call the police.
