(Detroit) Teachers Union President Directs Teachers Not to Teach
Heartland Institute ^ | 1/11/2011 | Zack Christenson

The president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) wants substitute teachers to, basically, stop teaching. He’s instructing them to do the bare minimum required of them–no writing of lesson plans, no parent-teacher conferences, and no grading papers. Basically, just babysitting. The Detroit Public School system has a shortage of certified teachers, so in the interim, is using substitute teachers to fill the gaps. So these are teachers in the classroom with the same students every day, not your teacher-is-out-sick type substitute. It’s completely disgraceful that someone in that position of authority would purposefully advocate providing a weak education to students. And, really, why is the president of a teachers union directing anyone on what to teach? Is that really the unions role? Says the president of DFT, Kieth Johnson:

“I truly regret doing this because it is not in the best interest of children,” but, he added, “there’s nothing in the collective bargaining agreement that says subs have to be responsible for grading, have to mark report cards or have to attend parent-teacher conferences.”
At least a union official has finally admitted to screwing over kids. But that’s only the first step. There are eleven more.

Fire them. Even if no one wants to teach in Detroit, it beats paying people to do nothing!

Highest drop out and failure rate in the nation in Detroit and they are concerned these teachers are teaching?

Close the schools, send the animals out on the street.

More reason why unions have outlived their usefulness and should be disbanded and dismantled completely. Union arrogance knows no bounds.

The Detroit Public School system has a shortage of certified teachers...,

If you wanted to teach there, you'd have to be considered certifiable.

They haven’t been teaching there since I was in elementary school back in the 70’s. Why start now?

Wow, why am I not surprised? The unions have so screwed over education in this country that one doesn’t even know where to begin when discussing them. The children deprived of any chance for an education and all because of greed.

Disgusting and shameful! But we all know there’s no way to shame a greedy liberal.

They are thinking about closing half the schools. If they do, high school classes will balloon to 65 students. According to the union contract, teachers must be paid a bonus when class size exceeds 35 students.

Dumb and dumber. Just throw the union out on it's ass.
