People love to hype 2012 as the end of the world. It's BS, but hey, when it gets into the public consciousness, things stick.
Anywho, a scientist named Brad Carter is predicting that the star Betelgeuse is expected to go super-nova very soon. If this happens, the sky that we look at could have two stars in it, even though Betelgeuse is 1,300 light years away. On the bright side, Carter assures us that we won't all die

Betelgeuse is expected to go super-nova very soon. If this happens, the sky that we look at could have two stars in it, even though Betelgeuse is 1,300 light years away. Which means it either went supernova 1,300 years ago OR we won't have a 'new sun' until 1,300 years from now.

saw this on a science channel, astronomy show about 6 months ago.
Betelgeuse is in a pre super nova state now for many years...if it blew 1500 years ago, we could be finding out about it any time now....

If a star goes supernova in the galaxy and no one sees it, does it emit light? I suppose he means, we may receive the light “any day now”. Not high on the list of things I’m going to worry about.

Super nova happen, sure.
Have we ever successfully predicted one, lined up all our telescopes and watched one begin to unfold? No. We haven't. This time might be the first time, but then again, how do we know?
A star's lifecycle takes billions of years. We think we know what will happen in the next 10 or 20? Seriously??
If it does go supernova, will it really appear as a second sun? Or as a bright star? Can you say "hype the story"?
This is just crappy reporting of some guy's opinion about something that might happen. It's right up there with the recent "California superstorm" story about the storm that will last 40 days and deposit 10 feet of water on California. Uhhhhhhhh. Yeah. That could happen. I suppose.

Orion would never be the same with his shoulder missing. I can’t get my grandson (6 next month) to stand still long enough to see him. I saw the Old Man in the Mountain only about a year before he fell apart. He’s still on NH license plates, though.
