The president’s State of the Union Speech was – at long last – the one I wanted him to give. It went after the very poison that has so sickened the United States of America. His call for us to shake off the Cult of Future-Hatred, indulged in by both right and left, was about urging us to start looking forward again, instead of to some mythically better past.

I met Brin, he calls himself a liberal. His stories, though, usually have libertarian governments, unlike the oligarchies or theocracies in fantasy novels.

so these ordinary citizens who having fewer rights and options than some convicted felons...who are rejected and despised even by the Republicans somehow had enough power in Washington to create the red-tape legislation of the past 2 years...which Obama had nothing to do with.

I met him at a con and he was going on about fantasy writers and their politics (Tamora Pierce and Katya Reimann were there with us). Someone accused him of being a right-winger and he laughed and said he was a liberal. This probably was just a comeback, since with Tammy in the room it’s hard to be the most left!
Yeah, he leans libertarian, and sort of lefty at the same time.
His readership got into him in response to the “right wing” writers like Niven, Pournele, and so forth, so the folks that buy his stuff probably are lefties. Except me!

Enjoyed his writings such as his Loom Of Thessaly and The Giving Plague,but after finding out his politics have soured on him a bit

Kiln People is very good, without much politics. Imagine being able to make a temporary, substitute you to do a specific task.
Heck yeah find a con and go. Even a small local or college con. I got three hours face time with Scott Card at a little con once.
It is eye-opening to meet an author and to be able to ask questions.
Or point out things like, the full moon simply cannot rise at midnight, no matter what planet you are on.
I’ve been to several cons where Niven and/or Pournelle were, and they were indeed an experience. :)
