NYU Fellow Issues Appalling Statements On Sexual Assault Of CBS Correspondent In Egypt

This afternoon, atrocious news surfaced that CBS correspondent Lara Logan had been subjected to “brutal and sustained sexual assault” while covering the celebrations in Egypt.

According to a full statement released by CBS:

On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS Correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a 60 MINUTES story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

When the news initially broke, I was on Twitter as people began talking about it. Almost everyone was shocked, appalled, and deeply sympathetic for Logan, except for one man.

That man was Nir Rosen. Rosen is a fellow at the NYU Center for Law and Security. When he realized what he said was outrageous and others began informing him of that, he deleted his worst comments. However, some were captured using a “screen grab

I'd like to build the world a home
and furnish it with love
grow apple trees and honey bees

and snow white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms

and keep it company
I'd like to see the world for once
all standing hand in hand
and hear them echo through the hills

for peace throughout the land

Rosen is a fellow at the NYU Center for Law and Security needs his *** kicked.

His comments are horrible. His ablity to “find humor” in a woman’s assault might help him in the future to find humor in the inevitable blowback from his own words.

Facebook is great for keeping up with relatives who are twenty-nothings. Certainly one keeps their profiles hidden and doesn’t post critical information or impolite comments on those pages for all to see.

Anything that public can and will turn around and bite you in the arse.

Twitter covered the riots in Iran pretty well. Gave those people a voice and us info.

There’s good and bad for everything.

Sarah Palin has made good use of Twitter.

They are the same as this, just different participants. I wouldn’t be scared if I were you.

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualist deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”
- Winston Churchill 1899

Coke. Oh, wait...you are talking about peace. Far out, man. She should have tried to project peace. That would have worked.

The only reason I have a twitter account, and the only time I ever used it was during the ‘09 demonstrations in Iran. The idea at the time was to overwhelm the police state. Lots of Americans and pro-democracy Europeans (and others around the world) set their base as Tehran.

Otherwise, I have to admit to being totally clueless about twitter or why anyone would do it. For most of it, who cares? And why young people expose themselves so publicly is beyond me. On that score, I can’t believe stuff they put up at Facebook, either.

Me either. I have a FB account. It’s private and only a few friends have access.

I don’t use Twitter, but it has it’s uses.
