Public Policy Polling produced a poll for the Daily Kos showing that five of the eight Wisconsin State Senate Republicans would actually beat unidentified Democrat candidates in a Recall matchup. Three of these five would get more than fifty percent of the vote (52, 56, 60), and two don't make it to the fifty mark (netting 45 and 48 percent of the vote). In four districts, more people disapprove of the Recall in the first place than those who are in favor of it. But here is how some news sites headlined the story:
The Daily Kos: Wisconsin recall: 3 GOP state senators trail Generic Dem, more at risk. Political Wire: Five Wisconsin Republicans Vulnerable to Recall. Talking Points Memo: Three WI Republicans Trail In Recall Election Against Generic Dems.
Never judge a news story by its headline; certainly not a Liberal one
The problem with the recall....you have to get twenty-five percent of the registered voters in that district to sign the petition. When you produce the finished product...you can expect a couple hundred folks who were not even residents of the district...who signed it. Then you’ve got around five percent of the folks who signed...who aren’t even registered voters. Then you’ve got a couple hundred folks who aren’t even citizens of the US who signed.
So out of ten petitions turned in...statistically, I’m guessing six will pass the hurdle.
Then you have to have cash to run a recall. A no-name Democrat against the established Republican? That’s another problem.
So, I’m predicting that out of ten Republicans that you might actually target...you get one guy actually tossed out. Oh, and the campaign money used in a off-year election? That could have been used next summer for real election campaigning for the President but you weren’t smart enough to realize that.
And if all of that doesn’t faze you...consider the cost of running the actual election itself by the district. Another $250k I’m guessing to make each district election occur. The taxpayer gets stuck with that bill.
Maybe the best suggestion here is to have elections throughout America every six months....and bankrupt ourselves into democracy.
One good thing about the WI mess - people are getting involved about the issues. Whomever wins the next WI elections, you know it won’t be because people aren’t paying attention.
Thanks Scanian.
Recalls (and special elections) are always unpredictable as typical turnout models etc do not apply. It is bad news if 3 republican targets are not leading. I assume they were from non-safe districts so they are in real danger. Losing 1 GOP member would be ok, but more than that would be disaster. It would embolden Dems everywhere and scare GOP to do this again.
Dems have much more money (Soros and unions can provide tens of millions for WI Dems).
GOP should really try to get 2-3 dem recall elections (from competitive districts).
Daily Kos is making a political statement. There will be no recall. DK is simply trying to tell people that the majority of people want a recall of the Republicans.
Goebbels would be proud of this move.
What about recalling the Disappearing Dems?
Wasn’t that supposed to be on the table?
Wiscondin has a tradition of successful recalls - Governor Walker’s career got rolling with a win in a recall election. I’d put the over/under on aucesses at 4.
And don’t think Walker can’t be recalled. CA recalled Grey Davis
Where’s the effort to RECALL WI DEMOCRATS?
Republicans have no guts!
At least 2 dems will go. Holperin and the guy from Kenosha are near locks. I’d bet on Hanson from Green Bay next. Cullen from Janesville seems nervous - he’s in Paul Ryan’s district - hard hit by a gm plant closing.

(AP) - Milwaukee County's top executive resigned Thursday, saying he could not be successful in the job after the furor over a pension plan he approved that could give some officials million-dollar pay-outs.
Wasnt that supposed to be on the table?
Good point. I recall that it was on the table. Runny cheese eventually turns bad.
That was a bipartisan recall effort going after the same person much like the Petak recall over his Miller Park vote.
Very few if any other successful large scale recall efforts in WI history.
R’s are focusing on 3 districts for recall in strong R/I districts. Those three districts look like they could be successful.
They won’t waste their time or money recalling D’s in Madison or Milwaukee.
Absolutely correct. That is one way the LSM guides public opinion. Many people only read the headline despite the article saying the opposite. Headline writers are a group of their own and are not the authors and reporters of the articles.
