Is A Certain Social Network Practicing Political Censorship? (Vanity)
04/03/2011 | Rational Thought

I use a certain large Social Networking site for most of the usual stuff; keeping up with family and friends and posting an occasional article which interests me. A few days ago, I posted a link to a Blog regarding the Obama Birth Certificate. Nothing offensive, just a story regarding what's been documented, what's been said and inconsistencies in the Obama past. The link had the normal amount of responses, nothing out of the ordinary.

The next day, I signed on to my account and the post I made had vanished, comments and all, just like it was never there.

Is discussing and questioning this President's past now considered hate speech or inappropriate by this Social Networking site? Out of all the millions of users, how is it that my account seems to have received interest and editing from an administrator? Kind of makes me wonder just who is reading the posts on my account, an account which is supposedly limited to just my friends. Even if one of my "friends" complained about the content due to political beliefs, how is it the place of a Social Networking site to classify opposing political views, obviously not the ones shared by this administrator, inappropriate?

I get it. To many Leftists, the question of Obama's Constitutional qualifications has become like a religious belief, similar to those who question Global Warming. If you do have questions (as I do), not only are you considered a "crazy birther", your questions will not be tolerated.

So much for Freedom of Speech.

I've already killed my account. I've existed a number of years without this Social Networking site, and I imagine I can still live on without it.

Paging George Orwell. Paging George Orwell... That birth certificate must contain some absolutely amazing information... Maybe he's really Ronald Reagan's love child!

Why are you protecting this “Social Networking Site” by not naming it? I find that very odd....

I would guess it was face book. They just hired Robert Gibbs.

Don’t think it odd. I’m just being cautious.

I don’t think it takes a great deal of imagination to know which one I’m referring to.

One should keep one’s Internet footprint as small as possible. Eschewing social networks is a big step in that direction (pun partially intended).

I’ve never been to a social networking site but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one rogue administrator and not a company policy. What you should have done is complain to at least a second-level manager and *ask them explicitly* what their policy is on political content.

My guess is that your link would have fallen under their guidelines unless you excerpted a segment of the article in violation of their policy with that source (such as the legal restraints that FR is under).

If the manager accepts that the link was not in violation, ask them to review who it was that deleted the material from their site and insist that they have the policy reviewed with that person.

If it is the company I think it is, the company is located in liberal towns and employs a lot of liberal college-aged kids to do customer service and site policing. Many libs take it upon themselves to delete things they don’t like.

Handled differently, you might have had the satisfaction of getting some commie-lib getting disciplined instead of just punishing them by the loss of your business.

The owner of the site can control the content, same as the owner of the Free Republic site does.

Are you seriously worried about some kind of retaliation by even mentioning them (Facebook) on this site?

Good for you. Facebook is a waste of time and a threat to your privacy, no matter what you do.

Here's clear and present danger one Social Network appears to have no problem with facilitating:

"Arab Spring: Male on Female Atrocity in Gaza Disappeared by the Western Media" - Phyllis Chesler, NewsReal Blog, April 2, 2011

One of those among the most popular Social Networking sites, the one floating the offensive notion of hiring the former White House press secretary (perhaps you've heard of the site - maybe its the site you have written about), has just recently facilitated the organization of a murderous mob among the hoards in the Gaza Strip.

The result was what might be called a Sexual Riot as admittedly youthful Arabs, supposedly demanding "unity" among members of Fatah, Hamas & Hez'bollah encamped there decided to unleash their fury upon female "secular Palestinian" reporters, with fists, hands and bludgeon.

THAT story, almost completely censored in the once-free West, and the pronounced role of this popular Socialist Network, the latter seems to have no problem encouraging.

These name brand "Social Networks" have, so far, really added nothing to what the Internet's application developers already provided in abundance, except perhaps the illusion of "safety." The ideology of non-ideology, the religion of no-religion, mayhem among politically correct mass movements and mobs with the correct brand and proper enemies is getting along fabulously.

The safety it provides is safety for special interests (like meddling Bureaucrats with too much time on their hands, RE: 'Government'), an audience to sell to advertisers.

My Facebook account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. Is this happening to anyone else?

Hi, my name is Katie. I work at Facebook in their policy team. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Generally, we don’t censor political views of any kind. In fact, there are dozens of groups on Facebook that question where Obama was born
(http://www.facebook.com/search.php?q=obama%20born&init=quick&tas=0.1331387
9132543016) and literally thousands that criticize him in other ways. In your case, it’s possible there was a mistake or a bug and we’d be happy to investigate further if you’d share the URL to your profile if you have it or the email address associated with the account. It would also help to have the URL that you shared that was deleted. Please email it to press@fb.com and we’ll investigate why it disappeared for you.
