House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Monday that he would like to see House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan run for president in 2012 and suggested that any candidate considering a 2012 bid should embrace the Wisconsin Republicans budget plan to cut trillions over the next ten years.
Sure, Cantor replied enthusiastically when asked if he would like to see Ryan jump into the race against President Obama. Pauls about real leadership. I think that thats what this public so desperately wants to do right now. They want to see Washington that will lead. They dont want to see individuals that will dismiss the current problems as something that we can just sweep under the rug.
Cantor joins a growing number of high-profile conservatives who have suggested that Ryan would make for a strong candidate against Obama in 2012. One of his predecessors, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, said as late as Sunday that its time to start drafting Paul Ryan for president.
Ryan said during an appearance Sunday on NBCs Meet The Press that he has no plans to run.

The two main TARP supporters in the house, the two new beltway boys.
he voted with democrats..he got con-fussed
What happened to governing on the mandate of 2010?????
Just get the spending cuts done in the debt ceiling increase and PROVE you wont sell us out before you tout your budget guy for a race he will NOT run in.
We do not need to run our entire Republican bench, for Heaven’s sake.
We need leaders in Congress, as well, no matter who wins as POTUS!
Good point. Or even better just refuse to increase the debt ceiling and the spending cuts will take care of themselves.
An ordinary guy in the street prognosticator that I know swears that Jeb is going to appear at the right moment to save the day for the GOP.
Cantor is a proRomney/anti-Palin man.
Just watched Cantor speaking at AIPAC yesterday.
Compelling and well received.
I always thought that was a distinct possibility. I know a lot of people in Florida who absolutely hated W, but would have voted for Jeb if he ran for POTUS.
Cantor wants to be Speaker..He fears that Ryan might get the job...
That’s funny. Just the kind of personal thing that might be true.
Ryan is almost the perfect candidate. He has not been perfect on all his votes (bailouts for GM, TARP)but he has so many other strengths.
1. Articulate- in spades. Great ability to explain issues to the public and conservative principles in general.
2. Courage- his budget bill, no one else has even offered a similar bill. Not tripped up by the Leftists liberal hacks of the MSM (eg Gregory)
3. Intellect. Knows his subject right down to the last stat. He has a strong grasp of economics (economic major) and would kick zero in any debate
4. Political experience. Over 10 years in the House and now budget chairman. Not as ideal as governor of 2+ terms, but not as bad some others in the GOP field.
5. Good demeanor. Does not come off as angry or anxious.
Good appearance, charismatic. He kind of looks like a Kennedy (which could attract the superficial voters).
6. Moral. Good character. As a south eastern WI resident, I have not heard of any skeletons in his closet. He also is conservative on social issues.
This guy needs to be drafted this year. He SCARES zero to no end. He would unite many factions (TP and establishment) while advancing the conservative agenda
What about Rick Perry?
Don't worry, the chances of him being elected is zilch. The "party people" really don't understand what the Bush name means nationally.
If Palin doesn't run, I could see it happening, with Palin's endorsement.
Maybe he knows full well he couldn’t win but wants to get him out of his hair.
Yes...I always look at motives especially when crap like this gets spouted by a RINO. As if he really supports a TP conservative.
I don’t like Cantor, but Ryan is the strongest person the Reps can run against Obama. He will win if he runs.
I classify TARP as different from the stimulus bills. Those who know their history of the 1930s know that the Depression didn’t really gather steam until the banks failed. The stimulus packages haven’t done diddley, on the other hand.
At the White House “summit” on Obamacare, you could see that Ryan was the one who flummoxed Zero the most.
Ryan has a lifetime ACU rating of 92. He is far more conservative than most Reps.
I have no doubt that, that is their plan. We got GW that way. I am going out on a limb and say that the next Republican President has not yet entered the race, whether Palin enters the race or not.
And maybe he is interfering with someones speaker ambitions.
Hmmm—no. We have some very strong possibilities for VP. Bush/West is one good one. West has not ruled out second place, as Cain has. Plus he is the better candidate, in spite of Cain’s gift as a speaker.
You are so right.
Who??? I dont see it. I know he voted for TARP.
Now his crowning achievement is proposing a plan that not only wont be signed into law but isnt even resonating positively with most Republican voters, in fact it might hurt congressional Republicans in 2012 without even being law. When Ryan gets something into law that has a good chance of staying in law then we can talk.
“Or even better just refuse to increase the debt ceiling and the spending cuts will take care of themselves.”
Alas, it doesnt work that way. The US Govt has signed up for legal obligations like entitlements and a spending budget for FY2011, etc. it will NOT take care of itself. It will be IOUs, social security checks not going out and/or a default of bond payments.
If Congress doesnt raise the debt ceiling it would be at least one of the above.
Which would you pick if you were in Obama’s shoes?
NOT raising the debt ceiling is unacceptable.
Raising the debt ceiling without spending cuts is unacceptable.
Ergo, we must pass a combined debt ceiling increase with spending reforms.
The wrong candidate for 2012 for sure.
The Democrats want to run a “Medi-scare” campaign.
The GOP will deliver the author of that plan as their top guy?!?
Wow. That’s about as smart as nominating Dole for Pres in 1996.
How’d that work out?
“The Democrats want to run a Medi-scare campaign.”
They always do. The fact is(and Ryan can articulate this fact effectively)that the Democrats are the ones that will be on the receiving act of a real “Medi-scare” campaign. Ryan has correctly pointed out in numerous Town Hall meetings that in 2015, the all powerful IPAB board will make life and death on ALL seniors. Then, the IPAB will be the ones pushing granny off the cliff. Ryan’s plan, as you know, does not change Medicare for those over 55.
We can have a substantive debate on this issue with someone that can stand up to the MSM with grace and clarity. Ryan is a substantive guy and principled conservative and is capable of providing leadership that will turn public opinion to his side. Dole was a mushy, moderate establishment old guard Republican and a poor comparison.
Who’s your guy or gal?
“The US Govt has signed up for legal obligations like entitlements”
Yeh like Obamacare. So they will have to ditch it.
Ryan is an unproven commodity.
They can only ditch them with a repeal vote, is my point, not by just ducking the debt ceiling increase.
If we get Obama to throw some govt spending under the bus, great.
Check the tagline.
