One of my brothers married a Democrat from Boston, she was raised a Kennedy Democrat of course. Oh my he would not discuss politics with her for several years but I used to get in some great heated discussions with her. She gradually became deprogrammed which I take credit for since they live in CA and she had plenty of people that totally agreed with her politics. She supported/voted for Clinton but her support did waver when he got caught in the Monica Mess. She didn’t vote at all in the Gore/Bush or Kerry/Bush elections. She was an angry Hillary supporter in the last election and did not vote at all once again. Just the other day she told me how much she likes Sarah Palin and claims if she runs she will vote for her. I almost dropped the phone! Now she can’t talk politics at all with her family, and she thinks it is great that my brother supports the tea party, though she won’t go with him to any of the gatherings because she is convinced that one of her “mean” Aunts will see her on TV. I have really enjoyed helping her see the light, it only took me 26 years.
My wife is by far more obsessed with her Reef Aquarium Hobbyist forums that I am with political forums. At least I log off at 10 PM to go to bed. She can often be caught still on line discussing anything from saltwater chemistry to sea slugs at 2 in the morning.
It’s a heck of a lot better than the Serbian Quilting Guild forum I lurked on.
I lurk on a site about shoelaces and aglet repair and stuff.
I'm still too awed and intimidated to actually comment there.

My kids just roll the eyes when they see I am on FR. I doubt telling them that I am not the only one will make much difference.
