Feds look to regulate food similar to tobacco, with hopes of saving money on health care
Daily Caller ^ | 6/23/2011 | Neil Munro

The federal government has a growing interest in the eating habits of Americans for the same reason it has an interest in tobacco consumption, said Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The reason is money, because three-quarters of medical-spending is driven by chronic diseases, such as obesity and tobacco-related diseases, she said.

Sebelius’ comments came at the tail-end of Tuesday’s White House press conference where officials showcased nine new photos that must be carried on cigarette packs. Officials used a survey of 18,000 people to find the images that would have the most distressing impact on groups of smokers, including young smokers and mothers of young kids.

When you’re getting an allowance from Daddy, you abide by his rules.

I’d rather not have a government that assumes the roles of Mommy and Daddy. It should be optional.

Why not put special ‘food dispensers’ into every household. When you want food, you get on a scale that decides how much will be dispensed to you. It will also keep track of what you’ve eaten that day and adjust the type and portion of food accordingly. It could also be configured to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide you will produce metabolizing the amount of food you’ve been given, and send the information to the government so that they can determine how much extra carbon tax you should be assessed.

Kids weren't obese until the government started to feed them everyday. THEY'RE OVER-EATING!! And it's cr** food.

Give them cereal and WHOLE milk for breakfast and soup and sandwich for lunch...PERIOD.

No pizza, no chicken fingers....

The gov knock all the fast food places and then serves the same thing in school. Dumb...just dumb...

“Feds look to regulate food similar to tobacco, with hopes of saving money on health care”

This was totally forseeable and would only be shocking if it did not happen.

Idiots wanted gooberment involved in financing health care. Gooberment begins funding health care with our hard earned tax dollars, finds that costs explode, looks for ways to contain costs, finds that smokers cost more money, and then begins to regulate what would otherwise be an individual choice.

Next will be regulating behavior that leads to obesity.

Gooberment never grows smaller or becomes less intrusive without a revolution of some sort.

We need a private health care system, with no gooberment involvement, but I don’t see the sheeple going along with that.

I'd recommend not giving them any ideas, but this has probably already been considered in some form.

When they figure out that old age is the root cause of medical spending we are all goners

You mean like killing people before they have a chance to become a "burden on society?" Too late, the dems have been preaching that for years with ABORTION ON DEMAND!

Kathleen Sebelius, HHS Secretary. "The federal government has a growing interest in the eating habits of Americans for the same reason it has an interest in tobacco consumption............."

More memorable quotes in the aftermath of O/Care.

From Vladimir Lenin: "Medicine is the keystone of the arch of the socialist state." W/ govt in control of medical care, all the defining, controlling features of socialist govt can be introduced.....one by one.

O/CARE will transfer massive authority to the Obama Admin over the lives of Americans, and their businesses. E-v-e-r-y-thing Americans do is related to health.

========================================

FROM O/CARE LAW: Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an individual’s bank account and will have the authority to make electronic fund transfers from those accounts.

NOTE: Socialized health care is impossible without seizing private medical records----BUT the 4th Amendment prohibits seizure without warrants. The Obama govt will do it anyway.

========================================

From NEIL MCLAUGHLIN in Modern Healthcare "When Congress passed healthcare reform, reporters joked that the package amounted to a Full Employment Act for health journalists. There were so many provisions and questions about implementing it that it would require weeks and months to sort through it all."

Most of us growing up got the EXACT same breakfast and lunch everyday! The only difference was the type of cereal and the flavor of jelly! We were so poor, beans and cornbread was a common staple for dinner on many a night, but our low levels of melanin did not allow us to get government assistance in the early-to-mid-70's!

SO cereal and PB&J was an everyday existence!

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR SUGGESTION!

I remember back when all the good little Republicans agreed with all the caring and health loving Democrats that smoking was a bad, bad thing and there should be a law that stops anyone smoking in public places like restaurants. It’s a public health issue they said. We don’t believe in total government control but this is different.

Many of us warned them back then. All I can say now is quitcherbitchen or do something about it. Sit on your arses and think it’s someone else their after again this time but they will get you sooner or later. Probably sooner. Total control of you lives by government is only a few short months away.

This is why the non-smokers should have opposed smoking bans.

Instead, they welcomed it as progress, because it was something they didn’t like. Now the precedent has been set to regulate behavior in the interest of health.

So, those same people who applauded government regulation of behavior will now have to suffer it themselves.

I’d be glad that the chickens came home to roost if it didn’t affect me also.

think of what that type of tax and regulation will do to our food supply. THAT is what we are facing.

Too true! Look at gasoline and electricity prices as a hint of what's to come. We have turned our government and all its power over to our future Masters.

“Medical spending” and “the environment” allow them to control virtually every single area of your life.

You might have a point.

They'll claim taxes on "unhealthy" foods will subsidize what they decide are "healthy" foods all while driving up the cost of food people want to eat. The poor will be even worse off and most of that revenue will be shifted into the general fund to be used on wasteful "progressive" schemes.

The idea of what's become called a "Twinkie tax" goes back to at least the early 1940s.

When MObama unveiled her "My Plate" sham, the site included a 7 day sample menu of healthy eating. I calculated what it would cost me to feed one person those meals on two of those days (Days 4 & 6). In one case, $44.42, in the other $49.95.

How many individuals are spending $18K on food per year?

In bizarre contrast, the FDA "food plans" (where they claim what food costs) top out at $4,200 per year for an adult male.

There is a mammoth chasm of a disconnect between their abstract cost claims and what they actually recommend as individual meals.

They are fundamentally unserious about providing cost effective, detailed guidance to those who need it the most.

Poor people are fat because fattier foods are less expensive. The solution is not subsidies! The solution is an economy that isn't anti-job.

Are they going to subsidize 95% lean ground beef, used in the Day 4 sample menu? That costs $7.30/lbs where I am. How do you produce enough ground beef that lean to meet all needs without driving up costs for cattle ranchers who need to worry about pollution regulations from dust clouds if there's a stampede?

These people are dumb as a box of rocks. They work against their own stated goals without know it thus ensuring perpetual failure.
