Today there were two important votes in the House of Representatives regarding Libya. In the first, a super-majority in the House rejected a measure to continue the US role in Libya. Yet when it came to crunch time, a bill to defund President Obama's military action in Libya failed.

The vote was specifically to "limit the use of funds appropriated to the Department of Defense for United States Armed Forces in support of North Atlantic Treaty Organization Operation Unified Protector with respect to Libya, unless otherwise specifically authorized by law."

89 Republicans voted no (along with 149 Democrats). They voted to continue funding the non-kinectic-military-action-war. Here are their names:

Paul

I'm no fan of Ron Paul, but the fact that he voted against this indicates something else was going on here.

No, not everyone is a dirty RINO. There must have been more to that bill than what we know for West to vote for it. Or Bachmann for that matter.

A yes vote would have legitimized the conflict because part of the bill was authorization for the conflict. Obama could have used a yes vote as authorization by congress.

Needs repeating. Too many reactionary people around here. I agree that voting no was the right thing.

The responses that “if the person I support voted against it something else is going on” are disheartening to me. My congressperson, a supposed conservative republican voted no, and I will not excuse that and just fired off an email asking for an explanation.

I'm inclined to believe that somewhere in this bill was a "poisoned pill." A phrase or stipulation that would authorize something that no Republican wants his name attached to.

These slime are good at that. Maybe it was some little amendment that would give Obama some authority, permission or funding to commit some other atrocity.

I’m afraid it was pretty straight forward. Defunding was the only hammer they had to reign in Obama’s war by fiat, and they dismantled their own relevance to the Constitutional war powers vested solely in the House of Representatives. Stunning, and without excuse.

What has happened to our representation in DC? The House?
Unbelievable.

Big Ouch to Bachman and West. War at any time, any place for any reason at all set by a president, speaks poorly to reality in this present age.

From Ron Paul's speech on the floor:

If this passes, for the first time the president would be authorized to use US Armed Forces to engage in search and rescue; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; aerial refueling; and operational planning against Libya. Currently, absent an authorization or declaration of war, these activities are illegal. So instead of ending the war against Libya, this bill would legalize nearly everything the president is currently doing there.

This bill would have authorized everything Obama has the military is doing in Libya except drop bombs. It would have given him the rubber stamp to continue supporting NATO dropping bombs and legitimized the whole thing.

The House of Representatives voted NO on authorization.
They voted YES to fund it.

What am I missing here that they are saving the Republic by continuing the war funding? A little howling that they were ignored utterly by Obama, and it’s all pockets to fund his agenda?

Why are people so reactionary here? Do people really think that Ron Paul is now pro war? The explanation for this vote has been pointed out MANY times.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/repjustinamash

“just voted no on H R 2278, which approves funding for the following activities in connection with the unconstitutional Libya war: (1) search and rescue; (2) intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; (3) aerial refueling; and (4) operational planning. Congress has not authorized the President to engage U.S. Armed Forces in war, and we should not approve funding to supplement the Libya war. It failed 180-238.”

It's legislative trickery. The bill that they killed earlier in the day would have authorized everything. The second bill, the one this article refers to, defunded the bomb dropping but authorized surveillance, search and rescue, refueling NATO aircraft (which they can't really do on their own). It was a stealth authorization. There is another bill to cut ALL funding. That's the one we want.

Also from rep Amash’s Facebook page:

“We could go one step further that says no funds shall be used, period,” [Rep. Rob] Woodall [(R-Ga.)] said. “And when we return to this body, Mr. Speaker, I believe my colleague Mr. Kucinich and my colleague Mr. Amash are going to make that amendment available to us, and I will be voting yes when that amendment comes down the pipe.”
