Is It Time To Be A Prepper?
Field and Stream ^ | 8/10/11 | David E. Petzal

Posted on 08/10/2011 8:43:11 PM PDT by Kartographer

Over the past week, my vocabulary of 268,391 words expanded by one, and that word is “prepper.” A prepper is not to be confused with a preppie, who is a person who has attended an exclusive private high school. A prepper is someone who believes that The End is nigh, that society is breaking down, and that if you want to be around to see what’s left, it’s best to prepare for The Wrath to Come.

Adin I say it’s time and getting closer to past time. Think of this quote which is one of my favorites:

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Now go look at some of the videos of the riots in the UK and of some of the flash mobs here in the US and look into there eyes.

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://www.tomeaker.com/kart/preparedness1i.pdf

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

I think that we are at the very least in for a collapse much like that of Argentina’s ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index), but as a armed society with a very large entitlement minded population our collapse will be much more violent and I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and large scale violence we are seeing this in the flash mobs as they grow bolder and bolder.

I see what I call ‘Pocket Pogroms’ taking place in many big ‘Blue’ cities and if you aren’t a “0bamamite yutes” it’s going to get Reginald Denny bad for you very quickly.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”

I would say even if you didn’t believe in prepping, it wouldn’t hurt to buy a couple of hundred pounds of rice/beans and such.

Better late than never I suppose, but if this guy just heard about the word “prepper” last week, he’s at least a couple of years behind the curve...

That’s sort of a start.

If you really want to find out, some night, before you go to bed, do the following:

Turn off your water heater
Turn OFF any and all gas appliances

Then go and hit your main power switch.

When you wake up in the cold and dark next morning, do you even have a flashlight near your bed?

I’m not pickin on ya, but livin in the northwest with ALOT of huge Doug firs around me, I lose power four or five times a year, so it takes some adapting and getting ready.

Just sayin!

Got a new prepper hint. My granddaughter was here this summer and had a bunch of friends, they all came in the house and each left with a sandwich bag of something they were snacking on. Curious, I asked what it was, it was Top Ramen, crunched up with the seasoning. It was good.

Ramen noodles seem to last forever and it would be a good replacement for potato chips and they are cheap.

They are better with “water” — you didn’t know about ramen as the basic food staple for college students for the last 30+ years?

Of course I knew about them but I’ve never had them uncooked as a snack. Where do you think they got the noodles, in my kitchen.

I was saying that they are a good snack uncooked, like chips. I never would have thought of eating them that way.

I have a few cases of Ramen noodles but please don’t plan to survive on them unless you want to overdose on sodium.

They are not bad but you don’t want to eat 3 packs a day! If you are interested in trying a new twist mix the spice pack in with some beans/rice. Crunch the noodles as a snack without the sodium.

You can get pasta cheaper in bulk and it stores well. Add some beef or chicken bullion cubes and spices and make your own.

Ah, I get it.

They only cost like 25 cents — I’ll pick one up and crunch on it sans H2O. If it works it is a REALLY cheap snack :)

I don't really think so, 66-69 was far worse IMHO, as well as most of the 70’s with the oil shocks, double digit inflation and seemingly constant recession.

Course now I personally have alot more options and control over my situation but my attitude is pretty much .. been there done that..

I don’t remember there being flash mobs then and the Federal Government wasn’t near as broke.
