Life's Big Questions: Penn Jillette, 'God, No!,' at Lisner Auditorium
expressnightout.com ^ | 16 Aug 2011 | Christopher Porter

Posted on 08/17/2011 11:20:58 AM PDT by smokingfrog

Penn Jillette is fond of Christians. Despite the title of his new book, "God, No! Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales," the talky half of the magic-comedy duo Penn & Teller finds those who follow Jesus to have compassion.

"If you say bad things about them, they won't kill you — which is all I require out of people I share the planet with," Jillette says. "The fact that I attack Christians is, in a lot of ways, showing how much I trust them."

"God, No!" is filled with hilarious stories from Jillette's life, each told to illustrate his reinterpretations of the Ten Commandments. But like the Christians he admires, this dedicated libertarian is ultimately a kind person — and an atheist who's open to all ideas about the universe.

Your atheism isn't dogma; it's you saying, "I don't know." I think skeptic and atheist groups should be really interested in the truth, which might include UFOs and Jesus Christ — we just don't know that yet.

And you seem skeptical of professional atheists. There's often these talks that people give about how to convince somebody — it's almost like Amway for skepticism. … I find that insulting, condescending and morally wrong — it also doesn't work. ... I never try to convert, ever.

Have you ever received threats because of your views? Atheists often like to get together and brag about how brave they are because of the threats that they've gotten, and I was a part of that. I would sit around with Trey Parker [co-creator of "South Park," "The Book of Mormon"] and [author] Richard Dawkins and talk about our hate mail. It's a weird kind of backward macho thing.

But you don't do that now?

If he is going to discuss definitions, agnostic seems to fit him better.

Jillette is anti-authority period, whether its religion or government. He is a militant atheist but also militantly anti-government. Thus, just like Hitchens, sometimes I like what he says and sometimes I don’t but most times I find what he says interesting. This book is a bit of a cop out for him. The battle today is fighting the government, not Christians. If he wants to write a book in line with his convictions, he should be writing an anti-government book.

God made them that way. That's why they hate Him don't believe in him.

Actually, Jillette is an interesting fellow and he approaches his atheism in a way which is not insulting. I think he'd be a lot better off being a Believer, but at least he's less of a jerk than a lot of evangelical atheists.

On Fox’s Red Eye, Greg Gutfeld asked him why he is athiest.

He said that he loved his mom, more than anything on earth.
When she suffered and died of cancer, he rejected God.

(I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. No matter what.)

Penn & Teller: "Recycling is Bull__%^*(^&t!!"

A famous episode about the silliness and wastefulness of recycling from their show. Very funny, and very true.

Warning: lots of adult language.

He praises The Book of Mormon in this interview. I have no desire to see this show - although I continually go to B’way - because I have two friends in television who thought it was the most disgusting show they’d ever seen. And these two guys make Larry David look like a religious maniac.

If Mr. Jillet gets saved, he will be an incredible champion for Christ.

I’ve seen him talk on this subject before. I may be a bit of a Pollyanna but I think there are seeds in his soul which have yet to sprout.

All he has to do is open the door because from what he is saying, Christ has been knocking for sometime.

The fact that he thinks and writes about it indicates to me that the Spirit is working there.

Why are so many atheists ugly?

Because the great majority of them are leftists.

In Penn’s case, it seems to be more external than it is with some of the others.

Better question: How do you threaten him with the fires of Hell? Dude lives in Vegas year-round.

The reviewer / interviewer will have to floss after this one.

Have you ever received threats because of your views?

Atheists tell me they don't have views, only lack of views. Guess is must be lies.

Actually, Jillette is an interesting fellow and he approaches his atheism in a way which is not insulting.

He's an obnoxious glutton who did the following...

The magic-comedy team of Penn & Teller has performed a stunt parodying the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, offending some attendees of a major magicians' convention, reports columnist Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review. The skit, performed last week in Las Vegas, included Teller, dressed as Christ on a full-size cross, entering the room on a cart. According to the column, a midget dressed as an angel "performed a simulated sex act on the near-naked Teller." Penn, in a Roman gladiator costume, unveiled the scene by pulling away a "Shroud of Turin" that covered the cross.
