Retired disabled military dog Rocky dies if not adopted; served three tours in Iraq

Rocky is a retired military dog who will be put down on August 24 if he’s not adopted. He served three tours in Iraq and desperately needs a loving home to enjoy his final years. Pets for Patriots is responding to a request to help create awareness of this veteran’s plight. We have spoken to authorities at Camp Pendleton and confirmed this story.

Rocky currently lives at Camp Pendleton, his home base since entering the Marine Corps in 2004. He served three tours in Iraq between 2004 and 2007 as a patrol and explosives dog, and returned to the states after his last handler was killed in theater. Since then, he has not had a steady handler, but has continued to serve on base until March of this year. By that time, a degenerative condition rendered him unable to work and he was retired. Typically an ex-military K9 will be adopted by his handler, but Rocky has no handler to call his own.

This breaks my heart. If I didn’t already have 2 dogs I’d drive from Texas to get this brave hero. Please, someone take him!

This story is crazy. There are enough men on that base to take care of that dog on their free time. What is wrong with this new military?

Why couldn’t a unit or the whole camp adopt him as mascot?

If Rocky had snuck across the border he would have been offered a free home and lifetime medical care.

As one poster implied, ‘back in the day’, the base would have ‘adopted’ Rocky and he would live his lived out his life as the Marine he is.

Hopefully it’s getting a lot of traffic and he’ll get adopted as a result. I’ve been doing what I can to spread the word at sites where I post with fellow animal-lovers and facebook. I would imagine others are cross-posting also.... Good sign, I hope.

As much as I hate to say it, the reality is that if this dog hadn't been a K-9 service dog, his extreme disabilities would have led his owners to humanely euthanize him long ago....

The hip dysplasia alone endangers any child who may playfully pat him on his hind quarters and the pain would trigger an aggressive reaction by the dog resulting in the child getting bit.......

My dad had a wonderful shepherd that suffered from dysplasia that everyone loved but he had to put the safety of the grandkids over the love for the dog...and I was given the task of taking him to the vet just prior to the family's annual 4th of July weekend get together at my parents cabin........

Oh man... if only... he deserves to be loved until his final breathe. It’s the least we can do for all he’s done for us.

They should call local News stations and have them do a story on him. They’ll get plenty of calls & someone will give him a good home.
