One threat – preemptive strikes:

The authors warn that extraterrestrials may be wary of civilisations that expand very rapidly, as these may be prone to destroy other life as they grow, just as humans have pushed species to extinction on Earth. In the most extreme scenario, aliens might choose to destroy humanity to protect other civilisations.

If you read the article, it says NASA assumes (Hansen?) that the aliens are “green aliens” - yes, it uses that term.

What if they are actually "brown aliens" and polluted enough to develop efficient, economical space travel? I guess NASA wasn't allowed to postulate on that.

Considering the facts that the US has practically abandoned it's Space Program, and that it is highly unlikely that humans will leave the Solar System even by our grandchildren's adult years, I don't think the 'aliens' know about us or care.

Even if there are 1 TRILLION planets in the Universe with LIFE on them, it is doubtful that any of them are even aware that EARTH exists. Most of them may only know our GALAXY as a tiny spot of light in the night sky.

Krugman said we needed an alien invasion to stimulate the economy. So... logically, this means we should produce all the global warming we can as rapidly as possible to encourage war with the Awful Green Things from Outer Space, thus saving our economy and validating Krugman's Nobel Prize!

A writer/reporter was given a certain amount of space they were required to fill each week. Slow news? Doesn't matter. You must fill those picas. Any trash will do!

Let me get this straight; Aliens are going to destroy us because we are industrializing and improving life for everyone on the planet through free market principles which have the side effect (if global warming scam is to be believed) that we have increased temps imperceptibly and with questionable effect.

I don't want to defend the Guardian...:^) ...but the “Green Aliens” speculation comes from the Cornell Univ. paper that is referenced by them.
