President Barack Obama hit another American city today claiming to care about the nation's unemployment crisis but showing his real concern is for his own political future. His chosen backdrop of the Brent Spence Bridge which links Ohio and Kentucky was the perfect setting for an attack against two of his political opponents House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). But his usual mixture of sarcasm and lies were no match for the truth Senator McConnell ably delivered from the Senate floor.

Excellent speech by McConnel.
The only things about that bridge that are in the Speaker’s territory, are the on and off ramps in Cincy. The Ohio River, bank to bank, belongs to Kentucky.
Is that true?
I've been over that bridge a bunch of times. I always assumed that I transitioned between States in the middle of the river. Do you have any links to a history that talks about this?

I don’t know how to link you anywhere, but the history is that the Ohio belonged to Virginia, Kentucky inherited her boundary portion when she split from Va in 1792.
In the 1960’s the Supreme Court decided that the Ky state boundary was limited to the rivers northern edge as it existed in 1792, not todays higher bank due to the 20 th century damning which raised the water line. So a minor portion of the river at their south bank does belong to Ohio, Indiana, etc.
Well,,, according to what I heard on Ohio talk radio today, the river, bank to bank, is Kentucky.
The bridge is crowded and worn and to rebuild it will take more than Obama talking about it.
BTW there are alternates for trucks (I-275).
I don’t know...does McConnell have something against turtles? He wants cute little turtles to be crushed by 18-wheelers?

The bridge across the Ohio between Henderson, KY, and Evansville, IN, is entirely in Kentucky—in fact you don’t enter Indiana until you are a bit north of the bridge on the Indiana side. I had always assumed that was because the course of the river had shifted at some point.
I am sure that you are correct there.
In fact that river shift allowed Kentucky to place a thoroughbred horse track on the north side of the Ohio at Henderson.
How great was that?
Why is the Ohio River entirely in Kentucky? At the time that the Northwest Ordinance created the Northwest Territory, Kentucky was still part of Virginia. The Potomac River boundary between Virginia and Maryland puts the border at the river’s edge on the Virginia side—the river is all in Maryland. Did Virginia learn from that and insist that all of the river would remain its possession when it ceded its claim to the land north of the river?
This subject is fascinating and EXTRA ORDINARILY important to the fact that the USA became the mega state that it is.
I am very un knowledgeable about it however.

He led Virginia militia to confront and capture brit outposts in what became the North West Territories.
Virginias claim to the territory became sterling.
When the 13 colonies created the new Federal State, the smaller ones without western claims agreed to surrender sovereignty after many many bargains (like the electoral college) to guarantee their influence.
One was to get Virginia (with Pa and others) to transfer their rights to the NW Territorys to the new Federal Government.
VA did so, but reseved total ownership of the Ohio River on its border.
To that ownership KY succeeded.

After yielding the rest of its land, Connecticut still kept its "Western Reserve" for a while, in northeast Ohio, which is why there is a Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
