The Washington Post released on its website yesterday afternoon an article by Manuel Roig-Franzia that has to rank as one of the more disgraceful pieces of personal hit journalism in memoryalleging that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio embellished the facts surrounding the departure of his parents from Cuba. You can judge for yourself by the piece itself and the devastating takedown of it by the Miami Heralds Marc Caputo. I just want to offer a few thoughts, based on years working in newsrooms, of how a piece like Roig-Franzias comes to be and why it is usually published even when it fails to make its own case.
The Post article is, in one respect, the result of classic reportorial cynicism. A politician gets popular and tells a self-made story and seems unimpeachable as a result and somebody is just desperate to bring him down a peg. That can be the reporter who does it, or the source who feeds him the idea. Given that Rubio is a conservative Republican Hispanic, the fact that he has dodged the bullet of being given the traitor-to-his-own-people-by-being-right-wing treatment through the modality of a journalistic assault until now is actually remarkable.

Memo the WaPo-Idiots and ask them why they did not do nor release a like ‘in-depth’ background on the AnointedIdiot; oh wait, my bad.... =.=
They certainly fear Rubio, don’t they?
The ombudsman for the Post will have to spend an entire week defending this story. The reporting staff ends up looking like a bunch of college newspaper journalists....with no leadership....and they basically take some 1-star story with no foundation....and pump it up. Then they wonder why people cancel subscriptions left and right. And they can’t understand why they get just a $400 yearly bonus for all their efforts.
Why? Pretty sure that is obvious.
Why? It’s part of the billion-dollar carpet bombing of each and every potential threat to power in 2012!
who cares?
i’m tired of rinos forcing people on us.
i want palin, cain, et al.
“The ombudsman for the Post will have to spend an entire week defending this story.”
The so-called ombudsman and the WaPost could care less. The paper is a hard core leftist rag that caters to its Republican hating, government-loving audience in DC.
What? The Wapo is a biased half-assed stupid liberal rag?
WHO KNEW?
Evidently the demorats “Latino Plantation” has just as stringent rules as the other plantation they keep enslaved.
The Cuban Revolution was well underway in 1956, so I don’t know how they reached their conclusion that the Rubios could not have left Cuba in the effort to flee the revolution.
I note that they don’t point that out, as well. In fact, they try to make it sound like the revolution did not come until much later. The revolution actually began in 1952.
I suppose that they might make the argument that we did not know at that time that Castro was a communist. The CIA did not draw that conclusion until very late in the game. But that’s pretty much irrelevant to their attack on Rubio.
The Washington Post and New York Times (and many other papers)no longer really make money on their newspaper operations.
In the case of the New York Times they are mainly being kept alive by Carlos Slim, which I expect is some part of a complex payoff, someone is trading him favors in consideration of which he keeps the Times going. I would not be surprised if the Post is in something of the same bind.
What they really are now, the part of their business that keeps them from going under immediately, is what we have long suspected - they are political campaign organs for the Democratic party, and some at least of the party interest groups. Certain people close to the Democrats keep them alive.
People who continue to read and digest the Washington Post and other leftist pap will never be able to identify the forest because of the brambles that they've surrounded themselves with. Marco Rubio is a part of the forest that rises tall above the brambles. May it ever be so.
This kind of c*ap gets so tiresome.
And it’s instructive to make comparisons to Democrats.
Obama has told the story of how his father came to America because of the promise of America, he was an immigrant, yadda, yadda, yadda. His father was inspired by America, etc. etc. All of it is false and fake boasting by Obama, yet he has never been called on it by the MSM.
His father was just another foreign student who was in America going to college, nothing more, nothing less.
His father was not inspired by the promise of America, was not an immigrant, did not intend to stay in America, did not have this great American romance with Obama’s mother, or any of that. Yet Obama will never be taken down by an investigative piece into his family dynamics. That subject is verboten.
During the last 3 years of my high school days Cuban families were sending their kids to area boarding schools and to live with local families to get them out of danger. I suppose they kept hoping for the best as long as possible.
One of my high school sidekicks was the son of the Minister of Agriculture in Oriente province.
Marco's story isn't uncommon at all.
St. Augustine was also an informal gathering spot for some of the guys who went ashore at Bay of Pigs. They didn't talk about it but a lot of us knew something was in the works.
My favorite ignored lie, delivered in a major ‘speech’ by barry bassturd was the one about how what happened on a bridge in Selma inspired his conception. The media, by ginoring that gross lie, exposed their total anti-American/anti-Christian bias. They serev a lie because their father is who he is, the father of lies, a murderer from the start.
“They certainly fear Rubio, dont they?”
YEP!
There is a good chance that Marco had ancestors in the USA a long long time ago.
