Things that make you go “hmmmm.”
A northwest suburban man says he needs to clear the air after coming to the support of his fiancee, who accuses GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain of making a sexual play for her.
For starters, Sharon Bialek isn’t his fiancee, said Mark Harwood in an exclusive interview on Wednesday night. “We were engaged last year in June but I think there have been some assumptions that Sharon still lives here in Mundelein with me” Harwood told the I-Team. “Sharon and her son moved out in February of this year and now live in their own home … so effectively we’re no longer engaged.”
On Monday, when Ms. Bialek was the first of Cain’s alleged groping victim’s to go public, Harwood was contacted by news organizations trying to find out information about her. He did numerous interviews during which he was referred to as her fiancé. “I made reference to the fact that we were engaged and got engaged last June, 2010 and I think the assumption then-we were still engaged. I think most people seemed to be under the belief that Sharon lived [in my house] but she’s not here.”

I don’t know if this has any particular significance, but for several days the media wanted the world to think Sharon Bialek was engaged to this guy, because that seemed to undercut suggestions she might be in it for money, e.g., Ben Smith at Politico:
In fact, per the Tribune, she’s living with her fiance, described as an executive in the medical equipment industry, in “a large, five-bedroom home… in north suburban Mundelein.”
He was described as her fiancé in the lead of an Associated Press article citing him as corroboration of Bialek’s account (although he didn’t know her in 1997 and says she never told him about it until Nov. 4). It was Thursday before WLS-TV got this interview, so that little bit of misinformation got corrected by the local ABC station in Chicago, three crucial days after it had been widely reported and woven into the media narrative as evidence of Bialek’s credibility.
Like I said: Things that make you go “hmmmm.”
Who is paying for it? I thought she was unemployed.

Yes. It’s very easy for people to get that somebody has been accused multiple times and that there were a couple of payoffs. That can be communicated in a few short sentences. Explaining why it’s probably not true takes a whole lot more time, words and effort. Well beyond the attention span of most Americans. And for many there will always be a doubt. Elections usually come down to a couple of percent. Take 2-3 percent from one candidate and give to another and you have 4-6% swing. That’s all it takes.
Oh, I get it. When you shack-up, you're "engaged". When you move on, you're no longer "engaged". What a farce!
The press is actually reporting the credibility issues with Bialek fairly widely. I think Cain’s effort to turn in back on them has worked to some extent. Right now his big problem is fighting a narrative they are trying to build. I think he needs to really get his story out there, not about the sex harassment but a summary of the man. A lot of people even in the time of google still have a ‘feed me like a baby’ attitude towards politics. Cain needs to start selling himself as well as his ideas. He has an impressive background but too many don’t know or purposely are trying not to know or blur it.
Bialek’s credibility has really been shredded.
She probably spent all this guys money, then made her deal with Axlerod and moved out.
Who had the most to gain from this? Interesting Cain has been on the campaign trail for months but she just thought about telling this guy a few days ago.

Something has bugged me about Sharon Bialek.
She didn’t seem upset or distraught at her press conference reporting these allegations. She seemed almost smiling at some points. Someone recounting a horrific experience is not going to behave that way.
And she seemed that way as she described Herman Cain reaching for you-know-where. She said to him that she had a boyfriend and that’s not why she was with him, etc. It just seemed too contrived.
To me, the appearance of Gloria Allred in this controversy only makes me more doubtful about this allegation. And now we hear that Sharon Bialek has declared bankruptcy twice, may or may not live with her alleged fiancee, etc. and this whole thing seems like a farce.
She’s no longer her fiance because they don’t live in the same house any longer? Since when did cohabitation a requirement for engagement? If they declared being engaged to each other, keep seeing each other, and never said to each other (or anybody else) ‘we break up’, I think they’re still engaged.
They are probably engaged to be engaged.
