Newt Gingrich on Amnesty
Natural Born Conservative ^ | November 23, 2011 | Larry Walker, Jr.

During the CNN GOP National Security Debate on 11/22/2011, Newt Gingrich recommended a comprehensive approach to address illegal immigration. Just for the record, what Mr. Gingrich really said about Amnesty may be viewed here.

Gingrich said that such a plan must (A) start with securing the border, then (B) establishing a guest worker program, and finally (C) setting up a board to review the status of each person here illegally. Such a board would distinguish between those who recently came here, and those who are more established. He said that those who recently came here, who don't have family ties, or are otherwise not established, should be sent home. While those who are established, who have been here for 25 years or more, who have children and grandchildren in America, who belong to churches, who have obeyed the laws, and who have paid their taxes, should be allowed to stay legally, but not automatically granted citizenship. For the latter, he recommended using something similar to the Red Card Solution, which would be used as a form of identification, to grant legality, and place them on a path towards citizenship.

The Krieble Foundation's Red Card Solution is a proposal which would allow companies to recruit workers from Mexico. The Red Card would permit workers to enter America, and would allow employers and immigration authorities to track them. It would aid in enforcement of immigration laws, with less intrusion by the government. According to the Krieble Foundation:

"It’s a simple solution. Private employment agencies would be allowed to open offices in foreign countries, and authorized to issue temporary non-citizen worker permits. The permits would be “smart cards” with a microchip that includes a photograph, fingerprint or other biometric identification data, and information needed so that border agents, police, and employers could swipe the card and know who the holder is, where he works, where he lives, who issued the permit, when it expires, and any other required information. Employment agencies would be licensed by the government and would be required to run criminal background checks before issuing non-citizen worker permits, much like gun shops do today. Employers would simply post jobs with employment agencies like they do today. Best of all, the program would be funded by user fees, not taxpayers."

Gingrich also recommended that H1 Visas be granted with every graduate degree in math, science and engineering, to encourage foreign students to stay in America.

For the most part, I concur.

Amnesty activists make me angry. They are dishonest.

Enforcement never comes and amnesty always ends up bigger. Only honest policy is enforcenent first and only if it is done, then we can discuss next steps. Anybody insisting amnesty first approach is a liar or honest amnesty activist.

What ever happened to the concept of conservative reason vs. liberal emotionalism?

As another poster noted on this thread, Newt's approach would reward those who came in immediately after the last amnesty.

True to form, you have completely reversed the concepts of conservative reason and liberal emotionalism.

You are extolling Newt wanting to repeat the mistakes of Simpson-Mazzoli - in other words, taking the liberal path of not learning from mistakes.

While you rip into those who point out that we don't need more foreign labor for the foreseeable future, given our rampant unemployment.

So until you can figure out that you have the concept of liberal versus conservative exactly backwards, well, go pi** up a rope.

I don't know why you guys have to be so nasty in these discussions. What ever happened to the concept of conservative reason vs. liberal emotionalism? I mean, it doesn't bother me, you guys can call me anything you want, but it does sadden me to see people who call themselves "conservatives" react out of emotion rather than reason; lash out with personal invective rather than actual facts.

I totally concur! Happy T-Day!

1st balanced budget in decades.
First actual reduction in Welfare program since it's inception.

Largest capital gains tax reduction in history.
Passage of the Congressional Accountability Act which forced Congress to abide by the same laws that they had imposed on businesses.

If that's the direction Newt continues to roll, then yes I'll take that over putting a inexperienced tyro into the office--especially one who has no understanding of foreign policy and no world vision.

Right now, we see Russia on the verge of returning to the same policies of the Soviet Union. They are doing so because they perceive the weakness of the Obama Administration. We need someone in office who actually understands the dynamics of international relations and is prepared on day one to counteract any moves by nations like Russia. We don't have time for Herman Cain to "come up to speed." The Presidency is the last job on Earth in which we need someone who requires OJT.

But I can say the White House isn`t the place to end a career, POLITICAL one that is. You see we`ve tried that line of reasoning, hiring the career POLITICIAN, the career insider at some level or another, and what has that gotten us? More government at the hands of Republicrats we conservatives have hired, thanks to the `Lesser of two evils`crowd.

And while I`m on the subject let me ask you this, what has that lesser of two evils dogma done to even slow down, let alone stop or, dare I say it, REVERSE the ever bigger and more abusive government trend by BOTH establishment parties?

“It is not surprising to watch a Beltway hack like Newt call for an amnesty program that screws American workers and taxpayers in the name of humanity for illegals. It is surprising to see so many FReepers waving the pom-poms for such.”

BUMP

You see, you are supposed to ignore the history that enforcement never followed Simpson-Mazzoli.

You are supposed to ignore the history of Beltway politicians saying one thing and meaning another.

You are supposed to ignore the history of DC think tanks rationally wanting to screw American workers and taxpayers with their proposals while putting forth the absurd notion that their proposals are good for this country.

You see, THIS TIME they really mean what they say. And you're just being emotional for looking at the past and questioning such.

On this I agree; not one candidate will be able to deport every illegal alien. I like the idea of fingerprinting and microchip. Fingerprinting identifies the “person” vs. using a phony Id that are a dime a dozen.

So we deport them, they just come back again, wash, rinse and repeat. We pay billions of dollars to deport these illegals. Secure the border first with droids, more agents, make agents immune from prosecution so they can do their jobs vs taking the word of an illegal. Then come up with a tracking program for those who work and pay taxes.

I wish one of the candidates would offer a discount on tuition for our American legal students who go into the fields of engineering, science, math vs. awarding a Visa to foreigners. Why not rewward our own people first to eliminate the shortage.

That was because your description of Newt's plan was patently and demonstrable dishonest. Either you were not knowledgeable of the Krieble Foundation's plan, or you were being intentionally dishonest in your description.

Sorry, that's not being nasty, that's being factual. Amnesty infers some sort of permanent residency--that is explicitly excluded in the Krieble proposal.

It was the same deal when Perry was popular and he came out swinging in defense of his Dream Act.

I think it’s akin to sports team loyalty, once people get invested in a candidate, but it’s instructive of how easily a nation’s politics can go wrong.

And since then, what has Newt done? Feasted at the corrupt Beltway trough. Stood with Democrats to propose new federal agendas. The list goes on and on.

Recent history is full of the fallen - those who sold out conservative values because they became consumed with the temptations of money and power once they became one with the Beltway.

IMO whatever core conservative principles that Newt might have had long ago corroded away. He has simply learned the Beltway art of telling us part of what we want to hear to get the vote in the primary while leaving open his run to the middle in the general. And, once elected, he will do precious little to change the system that he has become an integral part of.

What’s wrong with following the laws already on the books, period? Other than securing the border, the rest of Newt’s plan would be rife with corruption. Can you imagine the profit to be made from becoming a “new-found” relative to an illegal? Also, if they’re here illegally, how can they be paying taxes?

Gingrich said that such a plan must (A) start with securing the border, then...

The most accurate description of that 'strategy' is: the Juan McCain Ruse.

When he was far down in the polls in 2007, Juan came up with the "secure the border first" ruse to deflect his open borders history on the issue. It worked.

Since then, the McCain ruse has become very popular with squishy Republican candidates as we see here with Newt as he incorporates the ruse into his campaign.

(Anyone noticed Juan working night and day to get that border secured first since that was his promise in the 2008 and 2010 elections?)

Uh, no it was not. I guess you find it odd that I doubt the sincerity of the Beltway political process.

But my larger point stands - apparently your name calling good, my name-calling bad. You are a more equal animal than me, I guess.

I`d make it a federal offense and felony punishable by a minimum of one year in jail and massive fines, per each offense, to hire an illegal in America. If the employers know they`ll do actual time and lose their businesses for hiring them they`ll refuse to and the illegals will self deport, regardless of how much time they`ve been here. Also NO Gubmint help of ANY kind,no welfare, no food stamps, no tuition assistance, no housing-NOTHING WHAT SO EVER!

And no,I don`t think any length of time here some how magically makes the crime of breaking into my country ok.Don`t care if you came here 70 years ago and have never committed any other crime, fact remains you broke the law in coming, so out you go,thru the door or out the window, don`t let the handle hit you in the butt on the way out.

>>...I like Cain, but the WH is no place to start a new career...<<

Yes! Electing career politicians has been working *SO* bloody well for us that the country is in the best shape it’s ever been in!

Look, I don’t know if Cain is the best choice, but after the mess that career pols have left us in over the past 5+ decades, I wouldn’t object to seeing what a non-career-pol could do.

I also can’t say there is anything really compelling about any of the GOP candidates at this point, but I will absolutely vote for whoever opposes Obama. That’s all I know for sure at this point.

You might try looking deeper than the headlines at what Newt has been doing for the past decade. He has been very busy promoting conservative ideals. He has been teaching classes about the Constitution, our nation's history, and the Founding Fathers, he has been operating think tanks for finding the best solutions to the problems facing our nation, like health care costs. He has received quite a few honors for his efforts for various charitable causes.

I'm surprised that an alleged conservative would take exception to him making a profit in doing so. I thought we were all about free enterprise and success.
