Letter to the editor: Republican patriotism excludes those in need (Unreal!)
The Iowa State Daily ^ | December 5, 2011 | Thomas Walker

Posted on 12/06/2011 10:39:32 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

I read in Tuesday's Iowa State Daily that the College Republicans have begun collecting sundries for U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why? Doesn't the U.S. Army victual its soldiers? Don't their families send them yuletide goodies? Aren't GIs paid enough to buy what they need, and even what they want?

"As Republicans we believe in charity," stated Jeremy Freeman, a member of the College Republicans. Donating toiletries, boxed and canned foods, socks and beanies to U.S. soldiers who can already deodorize themselves, who eat better than the poorest Americans and who are gallantly garbed, is an eleemosynary travesty.

Necessities should be doled out to people who really need them and who might get them if not for the hundreds of billions of dollars being funneled to the Pentagon in the greatest squandering of money on the planet. If anything, Republicans should sympathize with veterans struggling to find employment, a challenge that may daunt the discharged soldier, who might wish he had reenlisted. Soldiers are to Republicans as fetuses are to them: prized. But once out of the womb-like army, Republican solicitude for hapless veterans goes where extracted zygotes go.

"We get to show the troops we still appreciate what they're doing for us," said another College Republican. What are they doing for us? Nothing. But against us they're doing a lot: creating anti-American terrorists in the countries they occupy. Said the same College Republican, "It can't be fun to be away from your family for the holidays. As if American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan had been conscripted? They chose to leave home.

Why do Republicans care so much about the military? Because the military-industrial complex is dear to their simplistic laissez-faire fantasies: a bottom-line patriotism that excludes the people at the bottom.

Thomas Walker is a lecturer in the intensive English and orientation program.

Academia has spoken. Remember: Mr. Obama was also a lecturer.

I support an end to hunger in America. Just imagine how many people Michael Moore could feed.

Having spent 23 years in the US ARMY I can assure everyone that this useless air stealing moron has no clue what he/she is talking about. If this person had a brain they just might understand that our troops go where and do what they are ordered to do. It is not a matter of personal choice. They spend their blood so some crap talking idiot like this can waste good air by taking their next breath.
I know more than a few vets who would love to have a much more personal discussion with this moron. If this person keeps talking this crap one of these days one of these folks will be giving him an up close and personal reply. I can only hope I have a ring side seat.

“Thomas Walker is a lecturer in the intensive English and orientation program.”

And that’s probably all he does. He probably has never produced a worthwhile product in his entire life.

I’ve met this kind of worthless slime. They pretend to care for the “poor and needy” as long as they never really have to get their hands dirty. As a “lecturer”, my guess is somehow he lives off the taxpayer dime, like a leech. It never occurs to him, somehow, that if it wasn’t for the soldier in the field, his worthless brain would have been severed from his neck a long time ago by barbarians that have even less respect for his thought processes than I do.

I’m ashamed to say that my little sister and her husband (Army Military Intelligence LTC, retired) graduated from this university. He was the honor graduate from their ROTC program and received a regular Army commission because of it.

"eleemosynary"

I had to look that word up. I don't think even William Buckley would use such a pompous term.

To: I still care
And that’s probably all he does.

I would bet his real purpose in life is working on his Phd. He has a BA from UC Hayward and a MA from UT Austin. Teaching English to foreigners at the University probably pays the bills and gets him a cut rate on his academic pursuits.

“Don’t their families send them yuletide goodies?”

Actually, no, many of them don’t get many letters or any care packages from home, based on reports from several years of sending care packages over there to chaplains and other oficers and hearing how they divide the items up among the guys and gals who get nothing.

One way to help:

Typical liberal, if one gives to one, one can’t possible give to others. Akin to if someone is rich, it must be why someone else is poor.

I suggest we establish an FR ‘goon squad.” After all, it’s only fair. SEIU has them, the Teamsters have them, Acorn has them. What we need are trained former military men who run about 6’2” to 6’8, weigh north of 225, and bench press 250 with their little finger. We could then begin selecting targets. Why let the leftist rabble have all the fun?

Thomas Walker is prime example of why I walked out of College.
The local college had an English Professor very much like Walker who said one day “The Vietnam War- Don’t mean nothin’-Because WE LOST.” about a half dozen of us walked out that day,I don’t know about the others But I just kept walking.
We did not lose that war in Vietnam—nor any of the surrounding territory - We lost the Vietnam War on the College
campus- and in Congress.Walker might learn a thing or two if he were actually embedded with one of those deployed
units he thinks undeserving of homefront support. But ignorant chalkboard revolutionaries like him would never
risk getting dirty ,or ground down by living with the grunts.

Communists should be purged from our universities...and public schools...and from the media...and from the churches...and from our political parties.

You are correct. Our congregation "adopted" several deployed units. The on-post postal facility paid for [with state funds] the shipping to all APO addresses. We shipped 10 - 15 flat rate boxes each month. Every box had one or two letters addressed to "any solider". We got a lot of thank you notes from them and many after they returned stateside.
