In Beck’s Shadow, Rise of ‘The Five’
The New York Times ^ | December 25, 2011 | Brian Stelter

Posted on 12/27/2011 10:02:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

When Fox News and Glenn Beck broke up in June, the network’s chairman, Roger Ailes, knew he could not put any single man or woman in that 5 p.m. time slot, lest he or she be compared to Mr. Beck or be pummeled in the press if the ratings tumbled.

So, about a week and a half before Mr. Beck signed off, Mr. Ailes wrote the words “The Five” on a piece of paper. Looking to the ABC talk show “The View” and to the time of day as inspiration, he pictured five co-hosts who could argue about the day’s top stories without feeling antipathy for one another. When announced on June 30, Mr. Beck’s last day, “The Five” seemed to be a temporary fix — even to the co-hosts, who were initially told they were just trying out for a weekend show.

But the show has stuck and has become a permanent part of the network’s lineup. The show’s ratings, though generally not as high as Mr. Beck’s, are growing. And most important, the advertisers that had shunned Mr. Beck are coming back to the time slot....

Laurie Dhue left the news business. She wrote a book chronicling her battle with alcoholism. She’s helping others in similar situations.

In his final month on Fox, Mr. Beck had an average of 1.6 million viewers; the following month, “The Five” had fewer than 1.3 million.

It has steadily gained audience share since then, and in mid-September Mr. Ailes made the show permanent. So far this month it had 1.6 million daily viewers, matching Mr. Beck’s final numbers for the first time.

Get rid of Bob Beckel and the show would be even better.

As it is, I only DVR it so I can see what Greg Gutfeld says.

The only FNC show I watch from beginning to end anymore is Red Eye.

Sheeeeyit. You mean the advertisers who slinked (slunk?) (slank?) away in fear after being harrassed by The Left Wing Lunatic Fringe.

Every channel is, first and foremost, a propaganda outlet. Business comes second.

Soros said he’d “get” Fox over Glenn> Murdoch was severely attacked in the UK. Murdoch now has a big interet in Dubai media. Faux news is borderline PETA fake conservative now.

Establishment, left or right. Stuart Varney and Cavuto are exceptions.

Eric Bolling is Conservative. I forget the name of his show on Fox Business Network but he’s a good guy.

Yes, Greg and Eric are usually great. The women are so-so; Dana is a bit predictable as a "mainstream" Republican and Kimberly/Andrea are OK, but not outstanding.

Beckel is just revolting. I usually turn it over to something else when his segment begins.

My wife made the key insight on "The Five" -- it is simply a conservative version of "The View", right along with a token liberal for laughs and to serve as a punching bag (Beckel), just as Elizabeth Hasselbeck is the token conservative on her program.

Hadn't thought of that. It is kind of like The View.

Can you imagine the ratings of a show that consisted of 4 Conservative women and one token Lib?

I think the ratings for that show would be through the roof.

I would take Guilfoyle and Tantaros a lot more seriously if they weren’t made up like hookers with mini skirts and purposely positioned with the leg shots at the end of the table. (Gee, I wonder why Bob Beckel and Juan Williams aren’t seated at the end?) How degrading! They look like they spend all of their free time shoe-shopping, having their hair and make-up done, and competing to see who can wear the tightest tops.

I think the view gets roughly 750,000 viewers +/- 150.

I didn’t click on the NYT website (I never do). Do they offer any actual numbers?

Every channel is, first and foremost, a propaganda outlet. Business comes second.

The funny part of that is that propaganda IS business.

None of the Marxists have failed to live better than their Party lessers, nor Nazis, nor any others who ply the masses with propaganda, including our political 'betters'.

Those insiders can trade tidbits which make 'news' outlets look more relevant, which gets those outlets more ad revenue, etc.

Money is power is money.
