February 22, 2012 Santorum Opposes Civil Unions For Same-Sex Couples
By Leigh Ann Caldwell Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, said today he opposes civil unions, too.
In response to a question by Dean Reynolds for the "CBS Evening News," the former Pennsylvania senator said same-sex couples should work through the legal system to obtain rights similar to those enjoyed by legally married couples.
(Watch a clip of the interview in the video player above.)
"I believe in people's right to be able to contract for whatever benefits that they have," Santorum told Reynolds.
"I believe in freedom of contract and people should be able to contract for hospitalization visits, being able to take insurance policies or life insurance," he added. "And I've encouraged folks if they want to build those relationships to do that." (Watch more of the interview with Reynolds on Wednesday's "CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.")
Santorum has spoken out numerous times against gay marriage. In a January 2011 interview on CNN, Santorum said he supports a federal marriage amendment defining marriage between a man and a woman.
"Marriage cannot be defined differently from one state to another," Santorum said. "For the interest of children, for the interest of society and stability of men and women of families, marriage should be what it is and that's the union of one man and one woman."
During an August interview on Fox News, Santorum told host Megyn Kelly that he respects people's "decision" to be gay, but disagrees with them "vehemently about what is in the best interest of society with respect to our marriage laws."
"I have friends who are gay," Santorum told Kelly. "It's not personal; it's about policy."
Civil Unions ARE “gay marriage”.
Only the name is different.
I’m against both.
And the government shouldn’t be licensing marriage at all in the first place.
So true. All it takes is the courage of one man. Wonder why pretenders to social conservatism like Romney and Gingrich are not touching this?
Good for him. It is the Truth.
Civil Unions give special rights to certain people—which is unconstitutional, especially because there is no Virtue promoted by promoting evil behaviors.
Homosexual activity is demeaning to human beings—it is vile and disease-causing and damaging to the body since it is unnatural.
Marriage between a Man and a Woman promotes the “general welfare” because of the Natural Law that is basic to rational human beings-—they have the DUTY to raise their own offspring—and that is the reason we even have contracts and private property which is necessary for man to do his duty.
We are a country based on the Laws of Nature—and our Rights come from God—and as such, we are forced to promote Just Law—which is defined as
Right Reason according to Nature.
Allowing “Civil Unions” is illogical and irrational by the laws of nature and God’s Laws. It is promoting evil activity which Just Laws can NEVER do==they cease to be Just Law. Unjust laws have to be made “Null and Void” by the judges. (John Marshall)
Sodomy is always evil and should never be elevated as “good” like it was in Ancient Greece and Afghanistan today. That is the slippery slope to resurrect pederasty since it is the basis of training for the homosexual lifestyle in boys.
BTW, Sex Ed in schools is designed to create the Afghanistan worldview where pederasty is “good”. Marcuse and the Cultural Marxists—who created Political Correctness also created the best way to corrupt the minds of children-—through Sex Ed in elementary school and the promotion of perversion—to normalize evil. It destroys Christian Ethics and makes the Bible “Hate Speech”—exactly what the Marxists want to do-—”Kill God” and the Natural Family.
I agree.
I have gotten THREE calls from the Romney camp in the past 4 hours. If I called someone 3 times in 4 hours, that didn’t want my call, I’d be in trouble for harassment. I’m sick and tired of pre-taped political calls getting a pass from the Do Not Call List.
When will thes folks admit it...They cannot fulfill man's being....the very heart of creation...procreation.
So they insist on ruining it for everyone else.
Tolerance...BULL!! They're just plain arrogant little monsters.
Not necessarily. I have seen people who have no sexual relationship whatsoever, who could benefit from civil union to save on taxes etc.
One example I know of were a couple of brothers, both born with a genetic condition that pretty much excluded them from the hope of ever attracting a woman or hopes of marriage or family. Both decent guys, but both also psychologically and socially impacted by their conditions. (They were tough to look at.)
They got older, and the only family they had was each other. They lived together in the same house that they bought. Then, the older brother (who did work at a decent job and had a few assets) died. His brother and only kin, and the only other person ever close to him in his life, had to pay taxes on his estate. Civil Union would have prevented that outrage.
Kill the Income Tax and the inheritance tax, and there is no need for Civil Union.
Toss the inheritance tax - a/k/a stealing money given from one family member to another - and let people establish private interpersonal contracts which are valid only between the signers.
The peril of civil unions is that forced recognition / subsidizing of them falls on everyone else.
And the income code tax too. Ever filed Married Single vs Married Joint?
Just do a flat tax and no inheritance tax, there is nothing but ego and political posturing that pushes for Gay Marriage.
It's more about the money than anything else.
Anything other than that, the federal government has absolutely no opinion on. Everybody wants a personality these days. Can't you just shut up and refer these jornolists to the law of the land. Think Coolidge!
Agreed. And as we learned from recent California history, civil unions are “not good enough.” Nothing will ever satisfy them.
