You’re right. It’s a pagan religion with a pantheon of very demanding gods. Unlike most pagan religions, you can’t have one primary family or house god. You are expected to worship them all equally and absolutely. That’s why they’re all freakin’ crazy! Maher is a high priest of crazy.

Because after his career as an actor went no where, he figured out he could make a ton of money by saying controversial things.
He does believe in God, the God called money. And he will do or say anything as long as it makes him lots of money. Unfortunately, his outlandish statements draw criticism from sane people - which results in free advertising.
Like most liberal idiots, he is also devious and ingenious. If conservatives could bring themselves to completely ignore everything he says, he would probably be gone in a year or less.
