This just in: Jerry Brown guessed wrong. Again. Tack another billion or so on that deficit.

We wrote for the weekend (see our column Sunday morning when it goes up here) that Gov. Jerry Brown is a bad guesser.

The ink wasn’t even dry yet – in fact the Sunday paper hasn’t even been printed yet – and we learn that Brown guessed wrong again.

Back in January Brown guessed that the state budget would be $9.2 billion in the red. Wrong.

Monday Brown revised his estimate. Then he said it would be $15.7 billion in the red. Wrong.

Today the independent Legislative Analyst affirmed that Jerry’s wrong again. It will be $17 billion plus some in the red.

Who knows what it’ll be by the time the Sunday paper’s ink dries. What we do know is that Brown hasn’t a clue...

“Jerry! Guess what’s in this envelope?”

“The Statue of Liberty?”

“Right! You win! Give me ten bucks.”

“OK!”

Here’s what I don’t understand. The government spends more than it brings in. It’s been doing this for decades. Why can’t they just keep on spending and keep racking up the debt?

It’s like someone with a credit card who doesn’t have a job. He keeps spending and the bank keeps allowing it. The difference is the bank put a cap on how much the debt could be. The federal government doesn’t have a cap.

And just like Europe, they issue “debt” bonds to shift the payment to the future ... unfortunately, the future does come!

Give him some credit for guile -- he knew it was much higher all along, and just flat-out lied about it. Thanks Mark Landsbaum.
