What is the tipping point that will really bring this whole thing to a head?
The answer to that question is stunningly simple, and profoundly prophetic. I am sure the children born into royalty are taught this very simple principle in kindergarten. World leaders certainly understand it. And CEOs of large multi- nationals figure it out early on in their careers.
The answer came to me one day when I stumbled across an article published by MITs Technology Review where researchers at the Institute of Complex Systems published their results on the question; what is the cause of riots? The study was headed up by Marco Lagi and his associates. Lagi thought the answer to the question of what was the cause of riots would be, well, complex. It turned out the cause boils down to one thing.
The price of food.

Prepper PING!!
From the beginning of time, money is THE most effective thing that will insulate you from what is disagreeable and dangerous in society.
That is why Liberals don’t want you to have any!!
YOU are easier for them to control if you exist and endure the same as everyone else.
The article referenced therein: http://www.technologyreview.com/view/425019/the-cause-of-riots-and-the-price-of-food/
We might be able to solve two problems at once. Are liberals edible?

Food yes, but also race baiting and tribalism.
Hyper-inflation would likely curtail the acceptance of food stamps/EBT cards, as retailers would be getting paid pennies on the dollar, due to the delay in reimbursement.
Grocery stores would be pillaged and then they would not be restocked.
In more affluent areas, the grocery stores would be guarded, but flash-mob tactics would start to be seen.
I don’t think the leftists have the stomach for a real fight, where they have to do their own dying.
Food prices, food distribution / availability and food quality are very strong seeds of unrest. To the prepper community, I advise the ability to grow enough food and a wide enough variety for a year (consider yourself, your family), replenish the seed stock, account for crop losses, plus some additional to trade.
This requires different types of seeds, called (heirloom seeds) and requires more land than most people realize. Lots of variables go into this, but in general, it takes about 1 full acre for a family of four assuming water supply and good soil. Hydroponics in a green house can reduce the volume of land significantly and protects the crops from weather and critters.
The problem with hydroponics is that the systems need to be in place before SHTF. This also means the knowledge to grow with hydroponics has to be in place ahead of time. And the systems are costly.
So, granted not the highest priority item on a prepper’s list but it is a good idea to have a plan on how you will grow your own food. Have some heirloom seed packs and the ability to can / dehydrate / store your own food in case the unrest lasts more than a year.
As Croc DunDee would say... They taste like shyt, but you can live off them.
Don’t forget “NBA Championships”.
I guarantee you that some leftist/communist politician/agitator will be standing up and shouting “you don’t got no food cuz whitey got it all!”
There are Riot Makers in this world, people who stand to gain in some political or economic way from the riot. These people are smart, and organized. They work to create dissatisfaction, they work to build the conditions under which certain people will riot, they work to organize those people for the event. The foment the riot, they direct the riot, they protect the riot from official interference, and they try to turn the aftermath of the riot to their benefit. They are rarely the people actively engaged in violence ... that's for the peons.
Many of Bam-Bam's political mentors are riot-makers. Ayers, Dohrn, Alinsky ...
“Soylent green is people !”
The guitar player in the band I just “joined” gets ALL of his food from his property. However, sometimes he’ll buy chicken and canned food at the grocery store when it’s on sale. He bought $300 worth of chicken once because it was cheaper than raising his own. He did the same with some canned food that was cheaper than canning your own.
We just started canning from our garden. We got a poor crop this year but it was our first and we did no soil prep. We’re already getting set up for the winter crop and next spring.
The Soylent Greenies are...
Theoretically, although you should remember the old saying "you are what you eat". The biggest problem is that they are nearly impossible to clean, and their bitterness runs clear to the bone. I can't even get my dogs to eat one. And I've tried.
The bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. NIV Proverbs 22:3
Take a look around flash mobs, soaring food prices, tyranny and race baiting by our own government, joblessness, cities going bankrupt a whole litany of warnings be prudent and start preparing.
For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:
http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf
NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!
You will find articles on many of the questions that you are asking as well as many questions that havent occur to you as of yet. Its written for those just starting or for those who are old hands at prepping.
For those of you who havent started already its time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, paper goods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, screws, nails, plywood, barbed wire, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.
Breakdowns do occur read some of Selco writings a Bosnian who lived through their civil war or Ferfal who live through Argentinas financial collapse. Such troubles do occur and when they do things get ugly quick. No one is claiming things will turn Mad Max or Book of Eli, but desperate people often commit desperate acts or as one of my favorite quotes goes:
“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.
Lastly this for the doubters and the scoffers.
There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.
