Late-night talk shows can't get enough of mocking Clint Eastwood's empty chair (Circling wagons)
NBC News ^ | September 1, 2012 | Craig Berman

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood legend, but not all of his movies were smash hits. He’s no stranger to getting poor reviews.

But he may never have received worse reviews than the ones he’s hearing from late-night talk-show hosts after his performance at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night, where he spent quality time on national television in spirited debate with a figment of his imagination.

“Amidst the tired rhetoric, empty platitudes and overwrought attacks, a fistful of awesome emerged in the night … where it spent 12 minutes on the most important night of Mitt Romney’s life yelling at a chair,” Jon Stewart said on “The Daily Show.”

Much to the Romney campaign’s dismay (and to Sen. Marco Rubio, who might have otherwise earned headlines for his introduction of the nominee), Eastwood’s argument with an invisible man was the story of the day...

Apologies to songwriters Burt Bacharach & Hal David (RIP 9/1/2012)

A chair's an empty chair
Even when Obama's sitting there
But Obama's not a man
Who can lead us to a land
Of prosperity - just hope and change
Just empty words, like the man - deranged.

I was in NJ on Thursday night in a place called the Cigar Emporium and it was filled with a bunch of cigar smoking conservatives. They had on the RNC convention and they found out me and the guys I was with were from Iowa and they cheered us as being fellow conservatives. Every man in that place was for Romney and Clint. In a place as liberal as NJ I was stunned that this place had such strong conservatives. I was warmed in my heart that so many would openly speak about their hope that we would kick out Obama and replace him and his failed gang with someone who might take the country in the right direction.

I have two B-I-Laws. One is an Uber Liberal that admits Voting for Obama simply because he is Black (with Progressive benefits) and the other who pays no attention to Politics but bought the whole Hopey Changey crap sandwich.

The B-I-L that pays no attention to Politics called me up a week ago and informed me that I was absolutely right about Obama all along. I still have no idea what happened that caused his “conversion”, but I decided not to dig too deep and look a gift Horse in the mouth.

Well, after Eastwood's “speech”, my B-I-L calls me again. He was going on and on about what Eastwood said. He told me Eastwood pegged it and was great doing it. He and his Wife, another “non political” person are firmly in the Anti Obama camp. That alone gives me some confidence that the Electorate is waking up.

I made them promise me that they would watch Paul Ryan's Convention Speech so they would really understand what is facing the Nation if Obama gets reelected.

BTW - This is the B-I-L that I wrote about a while ago who met and became friends with President Reagan after he left Office. I'm the Right Winger and he has a picture taken with President Reagan on his Mantle. There is no justice. LOL

“...most Americans heard Mr. Eastwood loud and clear.”

That’s the problem - they remember Clint - “Oh, did Romney say something, too?”

Nice try, sweetie. What do you and napscorp....whatever her/his user name is get together and brain storm all these opinions you post. You both say the exact same thing in most threads. But guess what? Since you can't stand Romney why do you care if anyone heard his speech?

PS.
The crowds showing up where he speaks since the convention are big and enthusiastic.

Who ever remembers much of what any candidate says in those convention speeches? Those speeches are all really just a measure of only one thing: Is this guy going to crack under pressure? Beyond that, even the best speeches are unremarkable, because they’re all 95% fluff rhetoric anyway (...our best days ahead...get the country moving...back on track...stay the course...time for change...more jobs...less deficit...strong defense...).

I’ve watched every single convention since 1980. I vaguely recall some of the 2008 GOP convention, only because it’s still fairly recent and because of Palin. Go beyond that, and I can’t recall much of any of the rest, unless it was really bad (e.g., my hero Jack Kemp’s speech in 1996).

I have a much better recollection of the debates, however.

I remember him on that show as well. Such a handsome cowboy!
And, I agree with you Cindy, he’s one of the best from “Hollyweird.”
And, I don’t think he cares what the Dems say about him.

No, he actually set up the public for a speech by a man who's been known for filling many seats of leadership.

The difference will be like the old Dean Martin celebrity roasts vs. the celebrity roasts of today.

The old ones were funny and clever. The new ones are tasteless and vulgar.

There in lies{?} the contrast.

Anyone who saw the 1950 classic film Harvey starring Jimmy Stewart understands the significance of the empty chair and that Clint Eastwood with his stuttering was merely acting like Jimmy Stewart.

What they don’t realize is that most Americans heard Mr. Eastwood loud and clear.

Many of those who didn't listen live will see the routine because it is getting so much coverage. I was not impressed when I watched it live, but in retrospect you are right and I was wrong about this. Clint Eastwood said things that will make people think, and he did it in a way that can only help the GOP.
