THE “TAKE-DOWN” of WZRD Chicago 88.3 fm, a student club at Northeastern Illinois University

WZRD “De-Activated” in Surprise Move

On June 29th, the Director of the Office of Student Leadership Development commandeered a meeting called by the WZRD Station Manager, deactivated the club, declared a lockout of student members and handed out a scandalous memo that smeared the club and current and past members.

However, the real “take-down” of the student radio station club began much earlier. On June 8th, the Assistant Director of Student Leadership Development and the Student Media Coordinator entered the radio station and insisted, over the objection of a radio club member, that two students whom they had been informed were neither club members nor properly trained operators, be allowed to broadcast from WZRD. At that moment the Office of Leadership Development completely disregarded the Club’s By-Laws and Constitution, and took over governance of the club against the will of it’s members.

In the world of take over acquisition the “deactivation of the club” and the process it initiated is likely seen as an effective take-down. It created a smoke screen of allegation used to initiate two review processes based on no evidence, no specific charges and actually in violation of the universities own rules and procedures; both processes designed to give a pretense of propriety to the take-down of the Wizard and the re-purposing of the station.

Greetings lapsus calami:

NEIU civil service employees have blamed the NEIU students for their personal failures. This is beyond SNAFU. You might need a scorecard to follow.

As one person in the broadcast industry noted in the petition comments section: This sounds like the act of a bureaucrat/wannabe broadcaster who gets there rocks off railroading their idea of what a radio station should be. Usually idiots like this end up in low paying jobs at WBEZ.(WBEZzzzzzz is the lame Chicago NPR affiliate with less listeners than WZRD.)

Bureaucrat A and B created a crisis to cover up for their personal job performance failures. Bureaucrat B claims students misplacing the FCC documents justifies the lockout.

Bureaucrat B missed the 2006 FCC license renewal application deadline. Bureaucrat B also did not file the 2008 FCC biennial ownership report. Bureaucrat B hired bureaucrat A in March 2009 to correct the FCC paperwork problems.

Bureaucrat A job description is "maintain appropriate logs and documents pertaining to FCC regulations and maintain communication with the FCC regarding campus radio station status."

Bureaucrat B did not properly manage bureaucrat A. Bureaucrat A did not file the FCC biennial ownership report in 2010. Bureaucrat A lost two and one half years of quarterly accountable documents.

Both bureaucrats were given new job titles and pay raises two days after the lockout. Post-July 1, 2012 bureaucrat A job title asserts in FCC license renewal application that she is unable to locate the records that her pre-July 1, 2012 bureaucrat A job title was responsible for.

A deliberately false and misleading statement?

Cheers,
OLA

Is this as bad as it sounds -- that she refers to her previous job title as though it's someone else?

I was a DJ at WVGS 'The Voice of GA Southern'. Did a Jazz show on Wednesday nights. We were just a music station, 1100 watts, no political position.

This is scary. If they can take down a 'little' college radio station, eventually they're going to come for the 100,000 watt stations that carry Rush and Levin.

Greets' to you too - well, it's refreshing that it wasn't in the vein of moonbattery that is all too common these days and is instead classic age-old incompetence and subsequent CYA maneuvers. No scorecard needed though - been there, seen that too many times. The last such dust-up I had a ring-side seat to was in the spring of this year. The IRS got involved in that one. A number of mouthy smart-alecks got schooled in that debacle.
