The gun business is booming. The question is, why?
Smith & Wesson stock Friday was zooming, thanks to a stellar earnings report. The firearms maker also boosted its outlook for the rest of the year. Because of the strong business, its backlog of orders more than doubled from the same quarter last year, the company is concentrating on boosting production and building inventory.
“We are underserving the market at this moment, we all know that, and that's a great opportunity going forward for us,” CEO James Debney said in a conference call with analysts.
And another gun maker, Sturm, Ruger & Co., also hit a milestone of sorts in terms of meeting consumer demand. It produced its one-millionth gun of the year…well ahead of last year’s pace.
"It took us nearly all of 2011 to build one million firearms, but in 2012 we accomplished it on August 15th,” said Ruger President and CEO Mike Fifer in a statement.
What’s driving the demand that has gun makers cranking up production?
Speculation has focused on fears of a coming regulatory crackdown on gun ownership. Liberal administrations tend to be anti-gun and so, the thinking goes, an Obama re-election would set the stage for stricter gun purchasing requirements. Hence, people are buying now in anticipation of difficulty later....

Mr. C4E and I are in our 60s. Any walking long distance and I’m on a cane. I am armed because I couldn’t outrun an assailant and I would be on the ground in one shove. I refuse to be a victim and will go down fighting.I am fortunate as I can budget purchases of ammo for my. 38 and my. 380. My priorities are ammo over artificial nails. But, that’s just me.

Higher demand equals higher prices. But if you plan ahead, its not a big deal to accumulate some guns.
I will be 80 next month. Had right knee surgery some years ago and excessive walking on that knee will stop me. A cane doesn't help at that point, too much pain to continue so I understand your problem. I'll be in my house and kill anyone trying to get in. I have secured the house, windows and doors (doors can't be kicked open). I'll hear alarms going off if windows or doors are touched enough to cause the vibration detectors to go off.
I can buy more ammo if I want and probably should. Too bad you gave up the artificial nails. I was always afraid those would set up an infection as some did, but my fingernails were, and are, long enough for me as I have to file them to shorten them so I don't look like Dracula.

I placed an order a week ago. They checked, and the stock at all Ruger distributors is at zero. The store does not know when the order will be fulfilled, but their guess is 2 months.
Firearms are purchased not only as tools; they are also a very liquid store of value, and they last forever. Most importantly, the value of these goods will increase after TEOTWAWKI - in opposite to most other goods. Food, guns, ammo, medical supplies - these are the prime trading goods. Guns also wear out with use (barrels worn out, rusted, parts broken or lost, entire weapons lost) - this ensures that the market remains active and you can always trade your spare guns for someone else's spare food or gas or a vehicle.
Obama is, of course, an excellent firearms salesman. But it's not just his personal policies that drive the demand. The heavy train of the USA is picking up speed on the downward slope, and even the best President will not be able to reverse fast enough. It may require a new generation of americans, if we start right now, to grow up with understanding that work is good, and that the moral norms of the Bible are there for a reason. Or we may need our own Joe Stalin to explain to millions of useless Sandra Flukes and her fellow travelers why they will go to this factory and will work these lathes and mills.

Now you need to buy ammo - a lot of ammo. And many pmags.
Let me simply say this: I live a very frugal lifestyle. I live well below my means, don't spend more than I can knowingly pay off in a month (I pay $0 in "interest on anything) so when I see a "good buy" on something I like or want, I can pull the trigger on it.
My sons (14 & 16) just inherited the S&W M&P15 I bought a few weeks ago to shoot up at grandma and grandpa's. I had zero intent in buying my Rock River Arms when I walked into the store today. I was there for ammo and a case only. When the wife asked what I was thinking about for my upcoming birthday, I pointed at the H&K AR-15 model behind the counter. Price tag: $2,800+ I was asked if I wanted to hold it, so I said sure. Fell in love with the weapon (I've been reading up on that specific model for months now) but couldn't handle the price.
Then I was handed the Rock River LAR15 and really liked it. The fit, quality, etc.. was incredible - I'd say as good as the H&K (or better) and I say that as a complete H&K bigot. The RR LAR15 is only the second non-H&K weapon I've ever purchased.
When we got home, I told the kids the S&W M&P15 Sports was "theirs" when we go up to Michigan. Yes, I teach my kids to shoot, the youngest one is a dead-eye with Grandpa's 308, he can hit a quarter at 100 yards. The older one ain't bad either (but he can't hit the quarter, he gets within an inch, but younger brother has the bragging rights.)
Keep in mind I live 30 miles SW of Chicago here in the People's RepubliK of Illannoyed, so when the SHTF I can at least defend myself on my way OUT of this shithole of a state.

That's what I found out/read very soon after I bought mine. I bought it Feb. 28, this year at an Academy store here in Texas.
So, they still haven't caught up on orders. At least you will get it in a couple of months.

I do that all the time - start to give prep details, then erase it and start over. It's the pits we can't communicate without fearing zombies or the government (that is full of zombies waiting to grab us).

Just curious. Do you have a specific place to go? By that I mean a dwelling well into the woods and off the beaten path.
Yep. Well off the beaten path. nearest neighbor would be about 2 miles away, one way to the house, up a half-mile gravel road that I have a clear shot on anyone coming up it. :-)

The thing is, when we bought the place 20 years ago, the thought of having to use it as my bug-out shelter never crossed my mind.
It's always been a summer retreat/winter get-away to get away from the bullshit of city life. How times have changed.
