I finally think I figured out why a Liberal prefers being called a “progressive”.

They are a cancer on America and cancer is very progressive.

“Progressive” became a dirty word. So they decided to call themselves “Liberal”, and now that is a dirty word. So now they’re “Progressive” again.

Because the reputation of “left” has been ruined by left wingers, they have to seek a new one.

The term “Democrat” has disappeared from campaign advertising here in Indiana.
You might think on election day there would be no Dems on the ballot....

Since the MSM seems to think Democrats are doing so well (in the polls) it’s interesting to me that the term is invisible in adverts.

We need to quit using the terminology foisted by the left. I do not call them progressives. I call them, to their face, vampire socialists. We all need to start using those two words together:

vampire socialist

Really?
Never knew “progressives” had been once popular among left-wingers in history.

Yeah this Liberal likes to be called a Progressive...

“I think the old standby definitions of who votes for which party have been blown away in this campaign. I think people recognize that I’m not a partisan Republican—that I’m someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.”

“Progressive” became a dirty word. So they decided to call themselves “Liberal”, and now that is a dirty word. So now they’re “Progressive” again.

In the 1920s it was hard to sell the progressive label. It had too much to do with government running other people's lives. "Liberal" appealed to people who were opposed to prohibition and censorship, so people who had once called themselves progressive (and really did want to run other people's lives) got behind the liberal label.

But "Communist" was an even dirtier word. So for decades many Communists and pro-Communists and quasi-Communists used the progressive label, and "progressive" remained a dirty word for a long time. That changed in the 1980s when liberals were in disgrace and disarray. A lot of the young people who started calling themselves "progressive" when "liberal" became a dirty word didn't realize that for a long time the word had belonged to Communist groups -- or maybe they did.

I never call them liberals. If you are a classic liberal you are in American terms a constitutionalist or what we usually call a conservative. The left stole the term and befouled it.

So I call them Dems, or leftists, or socialists, or fascists, or communists, or marxists, according to the context and according to whatever it is they are up to this time. But liberals, never.

The term ‘Progressive’ was co-opted by the Democrats waaay back around the 1920s or so from the Bolsheviks in Russia. Around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, the Bolsheviks quickly discovered that the word ‘communist’ had VERY negative connotations. As a result, they came up with the word ‘Progressive’ to hide their communist agenda.

FDR was a closet socialist who did everything in his power to bring socialism to America. He knew that Americans of the day would NEVER accept terms such as ‘socialism’ and ‘liberalism’, so he used ‘progressive’ to describe his administration.

After that, ‘Progressive’ has been a term that cloaks the true agenda of the Dems. Ironically, I saw a bumper sticker recently that read “No Tea for me, I prefer Progress”.

So, still today, ‘Progressive” is used to cloak the communist agenda of the Democrat Party.

Continue putting out the factual info, this is becoming common info over the last four or five years and leaves the progressives very angry and with much less ammo.

The truth is progressives are anything but progressive. Considering their agenda the word regressive is the correct term.

The term ‘Progressive’ was co-opted by the Democrats waaay back around the 1920s or so from the Bolsheviks in Russia.

Inaccurate.

The term became popular in the US around 1890, and was not directly associated with a particular Party.

It referred to people who were "progressive" in their orientation. Much of what the progressives were for was good, such as being opposed to the widespread and remarkably open corruption of the era. But they largely rejected the limited government of the Constitution as merely a hindrance on progress. Which of course it was. That's why they call them "checks and balances."

Both TR and Wilson were progressives, as each party had a progressive and a conservative wing. Wilson in particular was very clear on his disdain for the Constitution, saying it needed to be replaced. This was before liberals/progressives figured out you could just ignore the Constitution.

During the 20s the label fell out of favor, and the term "liberal" gradually replaced it during the 30s.

The notion that one party, the Democrats, was the party of progressives or liberals did not take root until the late 60s/early 70s. Up till then each party had both conservative and liberal wings, as they had since the 1890s. The divide was finalized at the 1972 Dem convention, when essentially all conservatives were purged.

Highly recommend Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg for extended discussion of these issues.
