Study: ‘Green’ cars might cause as much or more pollution than gas cars

Electric cars might cause as much or more pollution than conventional gas vehicles, according to researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

According to a study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, “the production phase of electric vehicles proved substantially more environmentally intensive” than the production process for traditional gas-powered cars.

Specifically, the study found that electric car factories can emit more toxic waste than gas-burning car factories. And greenhouse gas emissions rise exponentially if coal is used to produce the electricity necessary to charge “green” vehicles, according to the study.

The researchers compared the overall life-cycle impact of petrol or diesel-powered cars and electric vehicles and concluded that the latter can significantly damage the climate.

“The global warming potential from electric vehicle production is about twice that of conventional vehicles,” the report said. “It is counterproductive to promote electric vehicles in regions where electricity is primarily produced from lignite, coal or even heavy oil combustion.”

Batteries and electric motors are composed of minerals like nickel, copper and aluminum, which are toxic.

The authors of the study acknowledged, however, that “a more significant reduction in global warming could potentially be achieved by increasing fuel efficiency or shifting from petrol to diesel.”

At the end of the day, moving the car down the road takes energy. That energy may be stored in different ways, but at some point the energy must be generated.

Must energy generation comes from burning fossil fuels, and will continue to do so for a long, long time. So CO2 is going to be produced in order to move that car down the road, whether it be gas, diesel, hybrid or electric.

What are they talking about burning coal for electricity?

Electricity comes from the holes.

It's a good thing we're digging those minerals out of the Earth, where they could be damaging the environment. ;)

A twofer. Two scams in one article.

Global warming, climate change, call it anything but what it is. A scam!

Alternative energy, Green energy, sustainable energy, call it anything but what it is. An even bigger scam!

No one with a brain, is going to be able to make the case, against a hundred years of history, and 100 years of projections, that OIL, COAL, GAS, HYDRO, isn’t sustainable in the short and long term. And yes hydro power goes back a lot longer than 100 years.

Lies, deceit, half truths, and scare tactics to the contrary, there is a God, and he specialized in sustainability. He gave man a brain, and the desire to use it for more than a hat rack. Man didn’t “discover” oil coal, gas, and hydro, because God wanted to destroy his creation.

Man’s discoveries were for the benefit of man, and the joy of the Creator. Those who would label as evil that which God created and made available for the benefit and use of man, show a clear lack of understanding of the planet that sustains them and all who went before over centuries of history.

Of course. It was never about saving energy or saving the planet. It was always about forcing us to drive the kind of cars that they want.
The left HATES seeing one person drive in a better car than another person (except for themselves)

The whole “Green Thing” has been debunked.

it ain’t real. Not for good intentions but, because the math doesn’t work.

The reason some things cost more than others is because they use more total energy and therefore create more total pollution. Real green costs less, not more. No fancy study is needed to determine how green something is.
