FBI Surveilance Van Hot Spot
December, 3, 2012 | Wuli

Posted on 12/03/2012 10:15:55 AM PST by Wuli

I have a WiFi capable PC, and use that ability to connect a PC to a Verizon FIOs Hub/Router at home, from which I get my Internet Access.

Sometimes my PC is not in the same room as the Verizon hub, and when it is not then the wireless connection is at different states/strengtghs, usually less than excellent.

When the little icon for the wireless connection shows the connection is weak, or dead, I can get a slight improvement by brining up the little window that shows all wireless connections the computer finds available, and then disconnecting and reconnecting the one that represents my Verizon Hub.

There has always been two other "hotspots" showing, that don't belong to me. They could be anywhere among the neighbors around me.

When I was having the problem last week, one afternoon, I noticed that for about one half hour, and no longer, there was an extra wireless connection available that was labeled "FBI Surveillance Van".

O.K.; they could have been trolling, without a warrant or otherwise; but would they also be so stupid to identify their wireless router as "FBI Surveillance Van".???

I replaced my router this weekend and toyed with the idea of naming it “FBI Surveillance Van”, but that’s well known spoof on the neighbors.

Perhaps I’ll go with “PickUpAfterYourDog”.

I’ve heard similar stories, but when I lived with a buddy of mine in an apartment complex after college, there was a wifi SSID named “We Can Hear You Having Sex.”

I always hide my SSID, personally.

The FBI is notoriously tech-stupid when it comes to computers.

So the casting of Jack Black in Enemy of the State was on-target?

My SSID is the name of my local police department. My neighbor in Pennsylvania named his “FBIVan” or something like that.

Here’s some other actual SSID’s that are pretty awesome.

I have set up a bunch of them for friends and relatives.

I have named them “Porn Palace”, “Ron’s Party Place”, “Macy’s Noisemaker”, and Bill’s Brothel”.

Funny, nobody ever asks me to help them with that anymore.

There’s nothing so odd about that. Kemel Ataturk had an entire menagerie called Abdul!

I have an office amid a bunch of leftists in a leftist city. I set up a router that was locked down tight and wasn’t attached to any devices (in case anyone was able to crack it), and then named it a very graphic sex act involving Øbongo.

Then I locked it in a cabinet and allowed to to broadcast for a few weeks. It drove the IT guys crazy! They could “see” it but couldn’t figure out where it was broadcasting from. I finally got bored with it and hit the reset button.

That's a fun thought but I think if I had access to surf on
a Fibbie wifi server I would visit lots of birther sites.

I have a couple of old routers sitting around that I have considered doing the same exact thing with.

I thought about naming my router “**** Obama” or “Anthrax Hackers Defcon”. I finally decided I didn’t want to attract undue attention from neighbors and/or law enforcement.
