Mental Illness In America
Political Realities ^ | 12/19/12 | GD Jackson

Everyone I know is very disturbed about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, wondering why or how someone could do such a thing. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't dream of committing such a terrible act of violence. I read an article the day after that really brought to light something that might be at the root of this unspeakable evil. It is mental illness, in one form or another. I Am Adam Lanza's Mother tells the story of a mother faced with what Adam Lanza's real mother may have failed to deal with. Here is how Liza Long begins her story.

Three days before 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, then opened fire on a classroom full of Connecticut kindergartners, my 13-year-old son Michael (name changed) missed his bus because he was wearing the wrong color pants.

"I can wear these pants," he said, his tone increasingly belligerent, the black-hole pupils of his eyes swallowing the blue irises.

"They are navy blue," I told him. "Your school's dress code says black or khaki pants only."

"They told me I could wear these," he insisted. "You're a stupid bitch. I can wear whatever pants I want to. This is America. I have rights!"

"You can't wear whatever pants you want to," I said, my tone affable, reasonable. "And you definitely cannot call me a stupid bitch. You're grounded from electronics for the rest of the day. Now get in the car, and I will take you to school."

I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.

A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7- and 9-year-old siblings knew the safety plan—they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.

It is a bit of a read but please read it. You have to feel anguish and sorrow for the mothers and fathers who are at their wits end as to how to deal with a situation such as this.

Admin Note: This is my brother's first attempt at writing for Political Realities. He says he isn't much of a writer, but the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary and the issue of mental illness that seems to be at the center of the events has him very disturbed. It is time America wakes up and realizes how serious and complex this problem really is. Unless we are willing to have a serious conversation and apply some critical thinking to the issue, it will never be solved.

There are a 100k of these mentally ill people who are walking among us....posing a daily threat of some sort. Up until the 1960s when everyone got all fearful over state mental facilities...we could simply walk into a county judge’s office with a petition (usually five signatures were enough), present this, and the judge would send out some folks to pick up this guy for thirty days of evaluation. The thirty days would easily turn into permanent stay because of the results.

I think what you are seeing now is simply the “herd of cattle” that has grown quiet large and ventured out of their confines of the house. Gun control is the least of your worries....it won’t stop any of these mentally ill people from harming you or your friends or relatives.

There are more than that...homosexuals are 2% of the population.

No, the article (i Am Adam Lanza’s Mother) was written by a woman who has a disturbed son. This little commentary on it was written by the poster’s brother.

The article is very good, btw, and gives you a glimpse of the impossible situation of the parents of mentally ill children.

God bless those babies. I am just sick about them.

I used to work as an attendant for a state mental hospital back in the 60s. Most of these places are closed now. The left (ACLU et al) said it was against those people’s constitutional rights to warehouse them just because they were ‘nuts’, so now they just run loose.

There was a reason for such places.

maybe out of this horrible tragedy our nation will REALLY look at how mental health is handled in this country and take steps to dramatically improve it.

In some limited capacity, institutions do need to return; however, the patients who are housed there must be treated as humanely as possible, so they are not cruelly managed or left to wander aimlessly thru a modern bedlam or “Cuckoo’s Nest” environment. In our zeal to protect the rest of society, we cannot become cruel again to those mentally ill/challenged individuals.

God help us all to walk our daily journeys—for some, those journeys are especially hard, whether by birth, or by choice. We all fall short of the glory of God, and only thru His love, grace and mercy and our submission to Him can we be transformed.

I completely agree. Electroshock is barbaric, but so is throwing mentally ill people on the streets to live like rats (most mentally ill are not violent). People who are incapable of functioning in society do not, by definition, have rights.

The root cause is that these mentally ill creatures have not been taught to fear. They experience no consequences when they act in such a manner; “no electronics for the rest of the day”, feh! A hard slap across the mouth followed by a spanking for these children will teach them that they must control their actions or they will experience pain. Pain is the only teacher some will learn from. But our feminized society continues to deny its utility.

“There was a reason for such places.”

But we don’t have to go back to that model. We need to catch them while they are young and not insist that they be given meaningless and expensive educations through 12th grade (Fetal Alcohol Syndrom is the leading cause of developmental disabilities and mental retardation, and the sufferers are greatly inclined toward psychoses and violence). Working farms with hyper-scheduled days and no jaunts to Sprawl-mart or other self-defeating liberties have proven beneficial on a small scale. *Enter the bleeding hearts to not look at the facts but just see adults using child slave labor to benefit themselves...*

People with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome do not understand consequences no matter how strictly rules are enforced and they feel little pain. Their damaged brains are wired differently.

I agree with you 100%. Some people have to be trained like dogs and there's no PC way to explain this. Oh, there are some who lack even the survival instinct to let pain curtail their behavior. They truly ARE mentally ill. But the majority of the "mentally ill" are merely narcissists lacking in empathy, and a good thrashing can be part of training them to live in society.

Mentally ill people have physical brain defects that prevent them from being able to act normally. While I agree that there is no reason to allow a child to grow up wild and undisciplined, discipline will help little with someone whose brain is just not wired right.
