Fear pushing gun sales: Local firearms, ammunition purchases higher
The Elkins Inter-Mountain ^ | January 5, 2013 | Anna Patrick and Beth Christian Broschart

Seven mass shootings rocked the nation in 2012, with the Dec. 14 tragedy in Newtown, Conn. being the second deadliest in United States history. These events have pushed gun issues to the forefront of the media and public attention.

Local gun retailers, like many across the nation, are reporting increases in gun and ammunition sales following the Connecticut shootings.

Gun retailers are reporting that customers are purchasing new weapons out of a fear of possible new gun control measures.

Retailers including Wheeler's, P&M Outdoors and Phillips & Sons Pawnbrokers of Elkins are reporting a significant increase of gun and ammunition sales through the past two months.

Jim Wheeler, owner of one of the largest gun retailers in the area, said Wheeler's keeps an average of 1,400 guns in stock. However, more than 30 percent of his stock was sold in December and November. Wheeler said his best day of 2012 occurred in December when he sold 55 guns in one day.

--snip--

B & J Pawn & Sportshop and Phillips & Sons Pawnbrokers have also noticed a trend with less people willing to pawn guns.

"People are holding on to what they have," Phillips & Sons Pawnbrokers owner Brian Phillips said. "The threat of renewed bans on certain types of guns is certainly the reason."

Phillips said he does not feel gun control laws are the answer to preventing mass shootings...

It’s not the shooting, but the Left’s threat of a ban and registrations. Don’t buy from an FFL.

“Fear” did not drive my last two gun purchases. DEFIANCE did. It was my way of saying “No You Can’t” to the “Yes We Can” morons and idiots.

Absolutely correct—on both points!

“Don’t buy from an FFL.”

Just exactly how many non-FFL firearms do you think are out there for sale and do you really think we should all do without firearms purchases due to some silly fear about FFLs?

FFL purchases have a paper trail, gun shows don’t and yes, there are private purchases.

“FFL purchases have a paper trail, gun shows don’t and yes, there are private purchases.”

You’ve never been to a gun show, obviously. Gun shows in just about every State require background checks for any and all gun buys. While there are private purchases you are rather naive to think there are enough sellers to fulfill the needs of buyers.

Maybe you’re just a troll looking to stir up more liberal anti-gun urban legends”FFL purchases have a paper trail, gun shows don’t and yes, there are private purchases.”

Buy a gun and stand proud and stop suggesting everyone else cowers in fear like you obviously do.

Maybe you’re just a troll looking to continue stirring up liberal anti-gun urban legends.

If seller is FFL, maybe yes. Generally not true that background check required for gun show buys. Never had a background check, and no paper trails on any of my buys.

“ly not true that background check required for gun show buys.”

Many States now have gun show NICS requirements where any and all firearms purchases required at gun show to have a NICS check. Private sales in your Ohio are different, but, again, just how many private sales are there? Certainly not enough to supply the demand. Here in Colorado if 3 or more people group together to transfer via sale a firearm it is a gun show and requires NICS checks.

I’m in California. AFAIK, private sales aren’t allowed in this screwed up state without the involvement of an FFL. Do you happen to know which states allow private sales without bringing in an FFL?

Those crazy hoplophiles, clinging to their guns and bibles. They're too paranoid to know that there is nothing to be afraid of.

South MS and all the gun shops and pawn shops are pretty much out (along with WalMart). Found some .22LR at a local Dick's and heard Academy was getting small shipments in 1-2 times a week. Good luck.

Requests for the NRA firearms training courses I conduct are up 300% over 2011. Many requests come from mothers of small children.

Georgia as well. There are quite a few more. If I were in CA, I’d check NV and AZ laws.
