Reid Defends Storm Damage Remarks
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 13 Jan 2013 | John Semmens

Stung by being called an “idiot” by Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) for his claim that victims of 2012′s Hurricane Sandy suffered more than victims of 2005′s Hurricane Katrina, Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev) attempted to explain his way out the scathing characterization.

“My colleague’s focus on quantitative data overlooks qualitative differences between the two events,” Reid argued. “First, New Jersey and New York are states where many important people live. Many of the homes that were destroyed were million dollar properties. The same could be said for the businesses.”

“Most of the properties destroyed by Katrina were more like broken down shacks than decent homes,” the Senator contended. “Having them washed away saved the expense of having to pay for them to be demolished.”

“Second, New Jersey and New York are reliable ‘blue states,’” Reid went on. “Seeing these loyal Americans harmed and distracted on the eve of the election threatened the incumbency of the President. Louisiana and Alabama are both red states and Katrina hit in 2005—not even an election year.”

The statistics from the National Hurricane Center cited by Senator Vitter showed that Katrina caused 1,833 deaths and $108 billion in damage. In comparison, Sandy caused 131 deaths and $65 billion in damage.

This guy has to be the dumbest person in Washington...and that’s saying a lot. Why do the people of NV keep sending him back?

I don't know but if a Repub would have been caught saying this he would be forced to step down from his position.

Remember the guy that used the word “niggardly”? The blacks went crazy and he was gone overnight.

The double standard is staggering.

True. That’s why I think it’s just rude to post things from this site, without putting a big SATIRE in the header.

Either you're jesting, or you didn't read the "Semi-Satire" at the top of the thread.

Not counting New Orleans- under water for a month- which was mostly old, roach infested wooden houses in the 9th ward, especially.( Lots of expensive homes in Lakeview were under 12 ft of water tho- my former home among them). How about the ENTIRE GULF COAST of MS ? Vacation homes, businesses...wiped off the earth-not just damaged like the ‘important’ homes in the NY area.
Hey- this is not news to people in the south who get slammed by hurricanes regularly. We DON’T COUNT as people. REAL people are the ones in the Northeast and the West Coast. We are well aware that this is the common opinion held by many. The rest of the country just exists to FEED these soft cowards. I’d be ASHAMED to say the biggest city in the country couldn’t take a TROPICAL STORM for a few hours! Never heard so much chickens**t whining over a minor storm in my life! Issac sat over my area for 45 hours at tropical storm strength, no power for a WEEK. Rich, progressive NYC can’t take a TROPICAL STORM? Seems like the important ‘real people’ are weak, whining and helpless. People in million dollar homes are hardly helpless- why the problem recovering?

The article may be semi-satire, but the sense that only the N.E. counts in anything is not. That’s where the ‘real’ important people are- so the bubonic plague killing millions elsewhere is not as bad as two mosquito bites on a New Yorker. Sandy wasn’t a ‘superstorm’, it hit a SUPER SOFT population who equate thousands dying and whole communities washed away with no plasma tv or Broadway for a few days. Horrors! The more they moan about a TROPICAL STORM the harder people who lived through Katrina laugh!
