A FEW years ago, I awoke at 2:30 a.m. to more than a rapping, rapping at my chamber door. It was a full-force pounding of a body trying to break into my little house in Washington, D.C. It was the sound and scenario that, as a single woman living alone, I feared more than spiders in the house.
Because I was writing political speeches at the time, my BlackBerry slept on the pillow beside me. I grabbed it and looked out my bedroom window at the stoop below. There he was: tall, dark clothes, big. He backed up and then raced to the door, pounding his body against it. Then he kicked at it the way actors take boots to the heads of bad guys in the movies.
I dialed 911 and ran downstairs, my 100-pound Newfoundland with me.
I gave the dispatcher my address, let her know that I lived around the corner from a police station and said, Please hurry. She heard the loud noise and remained on the line with me.
I put the BlackBerry on speaker and pushed a heavy armchair toward the door. I watched as the wood expanded with each pound. The white paint splintered some. The deadbolt held at the top, but the bottom half of the door popped open, letting in the steam heat from the summer night. I took that chair and slammed it so the side pushed the door back in line with the frame. I held that chair with everything my 5 foot 3 inches had. My dog sat right by me on the rug, ready...

Just wow. I knew our culture was devolving, but devolving to the point that someone seriously argues for everyone else to be disarmed — and therefore at the mercy of thugs such as the one she personally experienced — because she cannot trust herself?
Just wow.
And then read the comments. Many, in fact most, apparently agree with her.
Our society is BEYOND sick. Sigh.
As soon as I saw “New York Times”, I knew what sort of piece it would be.
We live in a sick world..and the disease is liberalism, it trumps rational thinking
Well, I agree with her, too. There are people who should not have guns, and she is apparently one of them. I’m happy that she recognizes her situation.
she might be a person who would commit suicide during one of her depressive states.
This is exactly why most liberals are afraid of guns. They think they will hurt themselves. Liberalism and mental problems are closely linked. That’s fine, they can choose to not have guns but these same liberals then turn around and try to disarm us as well. Not acceptable.
Yes. IF she’s telling the TRUTH and this isn’t another “agenda” piece.
She lucked out in that incident, but she thinks the next one will go the same. I doubt it, especially where she lives.
This article is such a load of crap that I think it’s just propaganda.
Don’t you love the “...I’m a former Republican and a life-long hunter, but...” stories?
I’m glad rich, white liberals get to make these decisions for us. :)
She is arguing that if she had a gun she might lose her battle with depression and kill herself. I heard a similar argument once from an anti-gun college professor ... he said that if he had a gun he would have killed someone by now.
Since liberals have diminished self-control, and as the primary social dynamic of liberalism is projection of their own mental/emotional dynamics onto others, no one should own a gun. They can’t control themselves, therefore you cannot control yourself, therefore you should not own a gun.
Makes sense ... in La La land ...
yeah this woman is beyond comprehension
Our Republic has a better chance of surviving if the writer didn't vote. Maybe we should start calling for the 15th and 19th Amendments to be abolished to save the 2nd Amendment. A whole lot of other problems will be solved as a result.
Madame, you have the right to have a gun, and you have the right to not have a gun.
You do not have the right to take away my gun.
If you insist upon such, then I will have no choice but to view you as my attacker.
We are living Idiocracy.
Seriously, think I’ll head on over to Starbucks!
Let her make that choice, not the government. Her potential suicide, IF, she had a gun may be tragic, but it would be much more tragic for the 2.5 million people that defend themselves each year with a gun.
Is this the SAME Wendy Button???
We are living Idiocracy
