Louisiana Senate 2014: Bill Cassidy to challenge Mary Landrieu

Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) will announce a run for a U.S. Senate seat on Wednesday, sources confirmed to POLITICO.

The impending announcement that he will challenge Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, first reported by The Associated Press, will take place in a video.

Cassidy will then launch an announcement tour in the state, a source also confirmed.

Joel DiGrado, who was Sen. David Vitter’s communication director during his 2010 campaign and was deputy state director for the Rick Santorum 2012 primary campaign, will be managing Cassidy’s campaign, a source with knowledge confirmed.

Vitter’s backing would likely give Cassidy a leg up in the race, particularly if the more tea party-aligned Rep. John Fleming or former Rep. Jeff Landry decided to run.

Many of Vitter’s staff moved over to work on Santorum’s 2012 campaign, which bested Romney by 22 percentage points in Louisiana. Vitter is rumored to be considering a 2015 run for governor, when Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R) term expires. Having Vitter staff work on the 2014 Senate race would keep the senator’s voter identification records and ground operations fresh if he sought future elected office.

Landrieu has been identified as a moderate Democrat that Republicans plan to target in 2014.

Louisiana does not use a primary system to elect officials. Instead, the state conducts open general elections where any number of candidates can run for office. If no candidate receives a simple majority, the top two vote-getters enter a runoff.

Well the election should be honest. My wife and daughter work the polls and neither of them could imagine the voter fraud that takes place in other states. Louisiana also has a voter I.D. law, has had one for several years. When I vote I have to show my wife my I.D.

Well the election should be honest.

Her brother is the mayor of New Orleans. While it may not exert the same influence that it did pre-Katrina, there's no way that you'll convince me that there won't be any voter fraud coming out of that cesspool.

Might help her in N.O. but the fact that Mitch is no longer Lt. Governor but only may of one city....not much to be gained there. The Landrieus were always more popular in N.O. than elsewhere in the state. She’s done a LOT to anger those from Louisiana. (Notice she hasn’t come out in favor of gay marriage....)

Her brother Mitch would have beat Nagin had Nagin and the NAACP not bussed in and in other ways brought in all the Katrina refugees.

Encouraging news. Cassidy actually beat a Dem to win his House seat, so he’s had some experience with a competitive race. Plus he’s from the Baton Rouge area, and getting a good showing in that metro area is key to a win. I hope he becomes well known here in metro N.O. He won’t win the city (natch) but he needs big numbers out of suburban Jefferson Parish, which Landrieu actually....*gripes*...won last time.

She voted with Mccaskill and Rockefeller for the lame duck Dream Act 2010 amnesty they tried to force through. They only got 55 votes for cloture because Baucus, Tester, Hagan, Nelson and Pryor voted against it.

She parrotted Obama within days blaming Fox News for her problems.

The same way that other senators parrot Obama on issues like AR15’s being only for military.
