Japanese prefer to die from heat (rather) than turn air conditioning on

According to the police and fire department of Japan, more than 53 thousand people have been hospitalized with heat stroke since the end of May in the country. The number of lethal outcomes has reached 338.

Of these, 263 people (78 percent) are over 60 years of age. 75 percent were found in the premises outfitted with air conditioning systems, although they were not used. Meteorological services reported that in some parts of Japan, temperatures will be preserved on the level of 35 degrees Centigrade before the end of the week.

Perfect example of Eco-Brainwashing. When I visited Hong Kong they kept playing commercials about saving energy to save the environment and if you see a litterer call the polce to get the assailant arrested. I even saw TV documentaries about Japanese families trying to live a "carbon free" lifestyle. One TV show had a debate with the Japanese arguing for and against owning a refrigerator. The refigerator owner was deounced as an "energy hog family."

“Perfect example of Eco-Brainwashing.”

Probably not. After Fukishima, Japan turned off all the nukes and have turned only 2 back on after making a series of safety improvements. They probably have a serious shortage of electricity and the price is probably sky high too.

I think they must conserve electricity due to Fukishima.

from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_Japan Prior to the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, and the nuclear disasters that resulted from it, Japan generated 30% of its electrical power from nuclear reactors and planned to increase that share to 40%... Many of Japan's nuclear plants have been closed, or their operation has been suspended for safety inspections. The last of Japan's 50 reactors (Tomari-3) went offline for maintenance on May 5, 2012.,[18] leaving Japan completely without nuclear-produced electrical power for the first time since 1970. Despite protests, on 1 July 2012 unit 3 of the Ōi Nuclear Power Plant was restarted.[19] As of September 2012, Ōi units 3 and 4 are Japan's only operating nuclear power plants, although the city and prefecture of Osaka have requested they be shut down

Well give them a break, every time they rebuild, Godzilla comes and destroys so they have to conserve that energy in case of emergency.

Translation: "Oh no, we just rebuilt the city and now Godzilla is back and this time with Obamazilla"

sometimes, I walk to my car in the middle of summer, with the temp in the high 90’s and I don’t automatically turn the AC on...I start driving home with the windows up just to see how long I can stand it....I know, its nuts.....but relaxing too....

You’re not alone. Well, sort of...lol. I live in the deep South and rarely use my car’s A/C!

I love the hot summer and like to drive with the windows down!

Nothing will age an engine faster than running your A/C all the time (other than no oil in engine). Always start with A/C off until engine warms up.

I watch the Japanese English-language channel a good bit. Everyone within the range of the Fukishima plant is on three-quarter usage....even at factories and plants. If you live outside of this region...you might have trimmed your usage by ten percent....just to show you are helping.

The truth is...Japan built itself throughout the last three decades on a very marginal and limited electrical generation plan. I doubt if they go into a regular lifestyle for at least another five years.

My 1998 Chevy Silverado has the AC constantly on in the summer, Georgia, 200,000 miles and no problems. Where do you get your information?

Me, too. But I also put the top down on the convertible and then I turn the A/C on, put in a CD and crank the volume up a bit. People probably just shake their head but then we oldsters are thought to be a bit strange, so why not take advantage of it.

Same here. I was born and raised in Atlantic canada and I find it pathetic that idiots still wear hoodies at this summer heat in freakin’ Los Angeles. It takes a lot to tell people I just saw here in 80 degree weather why they’re wearing leather jackets. This is heaven to us ex canucks who are used to -20 weather LOL
